Sixty years ago when I was fifteen years of age I had lessons with the Southampton jazz pianist and composer Monty Warlock (1914 -1999). Monty had been a student at the Guildhall School of Music - and also had lessons with the great ragtime pianist Billy Mayerl.

 He had a varied career which included teaching, performing, (he often played at the Concorde Club in Southampton), accompanying - such show business luminaries as Eddie Calvert, Max Bygraves and Frankie Vaughn. He also broadcasted - his own phone-in request program on Radio Victory.

Monty could play in any jazz piano style - including Art Tatum, Erroll Garner and Fats Waller. In 1952 Monty Warlock composed "Britannia Rag" for Winifred Atwell - a popular ragtime pianist of the day - who played it at the "Royal Variety Performance" during that year. By January 1953 "Britannia Rag" was number five in the Hit Parade!

 No young musician could fail to be inspired by Monty Warlock. A great memory. Enjoy my own rendition of "Britannia Rag" !

Russell Austin was born in Southampton (UK) and took an interest in music from an early age. He studied Piano Performance and Composition at the Royal Academy Of Music in London. His main interests are Classical Music,  Film Music, Modern Jazz and Popular music of the 1930's, 40's and 50's.
