Introspective, engaging, electronic music exploring the concept of “unfinished” in relation to oneself, art, architecture and surroundings, ‘No One Really Listens To Oscillators’ is the gloriously titled new album by Indian Wells, the project of producer Pietro Iannuzzi from southern Italy. The nine track album is set for release on 15th July 2022 on Max Cooper’s Mesh imprint.

“Before I started to create this album, I cleared my mind,” says Pietro. “I  went back to when I fell in love with electronic music and listened to Radiohead’s Kid A and Amnesiac, Warp artists like Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin, Border Community, William Basinski, Massive Attack. I felt my last album was unfinished, and realised something had to change in my music.” 

The album’s first conceptual input came from an article in The New York Times talking about a new conceptual architectonical style. The term “Incompiuto” (Unfinished) was theorized by Alterazioni Video & Fosbury Architecture and concerned unfinished works that reveal the inability of projects to make infrastructures useful and sustainable for the community. 

“The head of this article was a photo of an escalator in the middle of nowhere in Calabria, where I live,” explains Pietro. “I knew this escalator very well and I immediately realized that my perception of this "reality" could be really different from people who have never lived in this area. It can be said that I grew up in the unfinished - between unfinished houses and other half-built works that are now an integral part of the landscape, without really noticing. In reality, our experience is influenced by everything that surrounds us and this context shapes us to make us live a distorted reality, which we very quickly get used to.”

‘No One Really Listens To Oscillators’ was the first track completed and gives the album its title. “I was spending a lot of time working on micro-changes on the oscillator frequency on the lead synth of the track,'' says Pietro. “After a couple of hours I asked myself “Who cares? Will people even notice this?” It’s a way to say that we have lost our ability to notice little things, to go deeper. To develop sensitivity.”

During the recording of the album, Pietro’s daughter was born in April 2020. “My daughter was born with Down Syndrome, which we didn't know anything about, so I started to study and understand how her life could be.” During Pietro’s research he discovered works by the American artist Judith Scott, who was born deaf and with Down Syndrome and read how her condition made her, in the eyes of society, an "unfinished" person. “I was struck by her beautiful and illegible works that are nothing more than pure and simple expression, an end to itself, with no other purpose.” The track ‘Life Of JS' is dedicated to her. 

The album’s beautiful closing track ‘Before Life’ was created soon after discovering his wife was pregnant and starts with a recording of his daughter’s fetal heartbeat. “For me it is a hymn to creation, in a very broad sense. It’s written for my daughter. It’s hope.”

‘No One Really Listens To Oscillators’ is set for release on 15th July 2022 on LP and digital formats.

‘The Eysenck Suite I – Melancholic’ is the first installment of a four part experimental aural jigsaw puzzle from the enigmatic Russian Linesman, who has become a somewhat cult figure over the past eleven years, crossing paths with mavericks such as James Holden, Max Cooper, Nathan Fake, Ryan Davis, Applescal and Laurent Garnier, along the way, via his imaginative transmissions from his secretive studio lair in Nottingham.

A musical diarist who deeply values his chosen form of expression as art inspired by his physical and emotional travels through life, he has released numerous singles, EPs and two studio albums. For the uninitiated to gain an insight into the workings of the Russian Linesman’s mind, his last album (‘Nostalgia Story’ 2013) was a sprawling thirty-seven-song flood of inspiration that was recorded live in one take, whereas ‘The Eysenck Suite I-IV’ is the result of four solid years of dedicated writing and numerous re-records.

The catalyst for this latest, bold musical project was located in a tattered old Psychology book by Hans Eysenck, unearthed from his parents’ loft. It contained an analysis of temperament theory and its roots in the ancient ideas of Hippocrates and Galen. Exploring these concepts and endeavouring to recreate them has shaped the project’s music and how it is presented. Galen had named four temperamental categories as being “Melancholic”, “Choleric”, “Sanguine” and “Phlegmatic”, and the esoteric Linesman’s compositions communicate his interpretation of each classification of Eysenck’s resulting model and the emotions they encompass, ordered and structured and revealed across four EPs.

Part one focuses on the Melancholic temperament that tends towards sadness and feeling low, resulting in a somewhat pessimistic view of the world. The name has been adopted as a synonym for sorrow, but comes from the Greek words for black bile. This first EP is intended as a soundtrack for times of sorrow, reminiscence and regret. But also for moments of withdrawal from over thinking everything, reducing anxiety, reflecting and triggering memory traces of happier times.

Although he use's James Holden's favourite software - Jeskola Buzz - the Russian Linesman writes all his music on acoustic guitar and piano, harking back to a past spent touring as an acoustic singer/songwriter playing folk music. This ethos has evolved into recording with vocals as well, before everything is heavily edited and drowned in electronic sounds.

“I find this method of writing allows me to find more curious melodies and give the songs an organic spine. I use lots of found sounds too, with the intention of recreating feelings and settings for my stories. Some of the finished songs still contain snippets of the vocals, guitars or pianos, while others will be fully enclosed in a digital sarcophagus.” – Russian Linesman
