I woke up this morning at quarter to ten
What I saw made me think I was sleeping again,
For there on the table beside me there sat
A mouse in a little round wickerwork hat.

It had a large crown and a very small brim
And I couldn't conceive how he kept it on him,
For a man's head is round, but a mouse head is flat.
There's nowhere to fasten a wickerwork hat.

Some people wear hats that they fix with a pin,
Or a jaunty red ribbon tied under the chin,
But this little fellow had nothing like that,
To keep him from losing his wickerwork hat.

But just as I thought it was fastened with glue,
He swept off his hat and said "How do you do?"
"'Tis a pleasure to meet you, sir mousie," I said.
"But how do you keep that wee hat on your head?"

"It's a simple procedure," he said, "To be sure -- "
Then he pricked up his ears for a noise at the door.
"Be gone, Mr Mouse, for I fear that's my cat.
She'll make short work of you, and your wickerwork hat."

He was gone in a flash as the cat sauntered by,
But I rose with a grin, for I thought I knew why.
It was style, nothing more -- what the French call eclat --
That fastened his little round wickerwork hat.
