Something's Blowing In

The musical form is a blues in triple meter with a couple of harmonic surprises. It depicts the character of Chicago - a prairie metropolis; urban and country which inspired an architectural design style blending land and cityscapes. The second chorus of the trumpet solo presents some "Miles moments" for Markus Rutz, and Isaiah Spencer rounds out the solo section with his rhythmic and melodic drum statement.

I wrote this samba during the 2013/14 winter vortex and features an unique harmony for the style using phrygian sounds and a swing bridge section.  Contributions by Paulinho and Heitor are testament to the concept that there is a spirit of Brazil within the midwest metropolis of Chicago.

Samba Of The Big Shoulders

The tune Tweedle Dee is really a type of blues.  It's a 12 bar form but in a Phrygian mode.
The melody of the tune repeats three times as the harmony changes for each of the three phrases.

It was originally written in New Orleans by Markus Rutz and for the recording, Markus wrote an introduction.  The opening and unaccompanied bass part however, is completely the inspired, improvised creation of bassist Lorin Cohen.

After his musical expression, the written introduction begins.  Drummer Charles Rick Heath IV enters with a beautiful groove and then pianist Dennis Luxion lays down some heavy chords to set up the theme which he accompanies harmonically.

Solo highlights from this track include a piano section with interactions between Dennis, Charles and Lorin that create a sense of suspense and awe for the listener.

My title for this ballad comes from silence and stillness. It is inspired by any of us that values peace and a sense of quiet and wonderment achieved by looking out to the world around us through the lens of a telescope, taking in all the beauty of that perspective.

Sometimes, a musical spark comes when you least expect it. It was while learning music by Sting on the piano that I was inspired to write this piece. Playing the first few bars of the harmony of his tune, Englishman in New York, suddenly my compositional mind led me in another direction. This track is the result.
