State Of Love

Born in Red Deer, Alberta and the oldest of four children, Ryan fell in love with music at an early age, thanks to his parents' record collection. He grew up idolizing the likes of Paul McCartney, Cat Stevens and Elton John. When he was thirty-three, a chance encounter with a high school friend sparked a new chapter in Ryan's musical journey, as the two began performing at open mic events as a folk rock duo called "Ryan & The Folkarounds". During this time, Ryan began writing and performing his own songs. In 2014, he self-released his first EP, titled "Waking Up." Shortly after it's release, Ryan began pursuing a solo career, performing at several venues and festivals around Red Deer, sharing the stage with many of Central Alberta's finest musicians. He has opened for Terra Lightfoot, Mohsin Zaman, Joe Nolan and Krief. In 2016, he was nominated Singer-Songwriter of the Year at Red Deer's 1st Annual Entertainment Awards.

Ryan's main genre focus is folk, with hints of indie rock and roots tying it together. His style is something he calls "suburban sad', referring to the fact that a vast majority of his songs have to do with that lost empty feeling  after a relationship breakup. Odd choice of material for a happily married man, but Ryan seems quite content with it, stating he's been highly influenced by similarly sad sounding artists, such as Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes and Radiohead. A fiercely shy figure in the local music scene, he finds in himself an unexpected combination of strength and calm through public performance. In September 2016, he self-released his second EP, entitled "Basement Sessions". He continues to live in Red Deer with his wife and children.
