Here's a track I recorded, mixed, and mastered with my good friend, Geoff Brown. We were asked to record a few demos for a fantastic local trio at U of M.

Piano - Cole Abod
Bass - Mohan Ritesma
Drums - Eliza Salem

We used some standard API preamps on all mics, along with a variety of plugins in the box.

On piano, we used a pair of fatheads in an ORTF fashion in addition to a pair of KM 184s on the high and low end.

On bass, we used an RE20 to capture the low end and an M60 FET to capture some of the finger noises.

We used a space pair of DPA 4011A mics on drums, as well as another M60 FET on snare, a 421 on the rack and floor toms, an RE20 inside the port of the kick, and finally a C414 XLS on the beater of the kick.

We used two more C414 XLS microphones to capture the room sound.

Here is a copy of Sapphirus Quartet's submission for the North American Saxophone Alliance's quartet competition. The group is extraordinarily talented, and moved on to the semi-finals in March.

I close miked each saxophone, using a TLM 193 on baritone and tenor, and a DPA 4011 on soprano and alto.

I also set up a stereo pair of KM 184s in XY with a pair of KSM 141s as left and right outriggers, pointed inwards.

I did very little to this track in post, as the requirements asked for very little audio editing. The studio proved to be very dry (surprise surprise), even after I moved most of the absorption panels.

This is the audio I recorded and mixed for Standing Room Only, the Michigan Daily's version of an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. It was quite the challenge to record such a large band with my mobile setup, but I was pretty happy with the result, all things considered.

This was the second podcast I ever recorded as a sophmore. Although I have definitely improved in terms of production techniques, I still believe that this recording has some merit to it, and it terms of content, I'm actually pretty proud of it.

Podcast Sample: The Sit Down - Aaron Dworkin

This is a sample of an improvised comedy podcast I worked on when I was first getting started in the podcast medium. While the audio in this sample isn't perfect, I really enjoy this sample because I was able to improvise piano along with the comedians. It was a ton of fun, and showcases a bit of my creativeness that flows outside of audio engineering.

I've worked on Arts, Interrupted since its inception and have always enjoyed working on it because of my love of culture. Although now I only edit episodes after they've been recorded, I used to be really involved in the podcast, from brainstorming ideas, to recording, to editing and mixing. I liked this episode because it featured student artists from around campus, and gave some perspective on what its like to be a full-time student and an artist. Podcast Sample - Arts, Interrupted: Student Artists

This track showcases an awesome opportunity I had to record UM’s jazz trombone ensemble with special guest Wycliffe Gordon. I was able to have this experience thanks to my position on the audio staff at the Duderstadt Audio Studio we have here at UM. Me and two of my colleagues ran the session, setting up microphones and running Pro Tools. After we went through each chart the ensemble had, I was able to mix them all. We ran into a few issues with bleed and the ensemble not being as rehearsed as we expected, but I sort of embraced the bleed to make the recording a bit more cohesive and live sounding. Each of the channels below were run through API preamps, and we also were able to set up a headphone monitoring situation so that the isolated drummer and soloist would be able to hear the rest of the group and vice versa. In our main tracking room, we had trombones facing one direction, while bass was positioned in the opposite corner along with piano, which had its lid open towards the trombones in order to avoid direct sound.
