Responsible for the thirteenth outing on OPIA Records is Argentinian artist Matias Richter, probably known by many under his artist moniker Richer and as the label-head of Calypso’s Dream. Coming in with four tracks on his Klub Control EP, which are musically connecting the dots between the 90s and the present, Richer produced a potpourri of catchy takes that bring together the club-vibe with beach-enthusiasm or in other words: Hello to the summer ’23. The A2 Move At Night does what the track title suggests, deep chords with trancey dreamy wefts float over a housey bassline with minimal-influences as if seawater were sprinkled on a hot body to kiss the day away and move through the night.

Exclusive: Jakob Mäder - The Essence (Shan Remix)

Stuttgart-resident Jakob Mäder delivers the next outing on infamous Skylax Records with his seven tracker Chord Anthem, which consists out of six original tracks and a remix from Running Back mainstay Shan. The tracks on the EP combine an House, Italo and enough Acid bleeps to make an everlasting impression on the floors. With a modern twist Mäder manages to reissue if not to say revive the golden era of 90s House music with his approach, however sounding modern and classic at the same time. As before-mentioned Shan took on remix duties for The Essence and comes up with a track, which touches the Acid genre as well as it includes trancey sound-sequences all floating over a House-drum pattern. It's surely one of these tracks soaking one into its soundscapes and releasing one on the magic it unfolds with every beat it makes.

At a time when pressing becomes increasingly difficult for small labels, due to the increase in production costs to clearly prohibitive amounts, Diogo returns home with a collection of tracks in digital format.

Following two tracks on the label compilation “Variables,” Iranian-born, Berlin-raised DJ and producer Nyma returns to Items & Things with Kybernetik, his debut solo release for the label, released here as a digital exclusive. A mainstay on Berlinʼs club scene and perennial figure in the Items & Things camp, Nyma hones his craft with Kybernetik, its slow burning disco groove and relentless funk guaranteed to function as adequately in a warm up set as at peak time; its contagious rhythms as appropriate for that early morning injection of energy or for the creation of that late night disco explosion.
 
Fusing organic instrumentation with machine, the driving rhythms, slap-bass hits, and infectious guitar riffs of the original are drawn out on the EPʼs flip side, with the dub version bringing the bass even further into the forefront of the mix: breathing additional groove into the track whilst nevertheless maintaining the dynamic intensity of the original. 

Remix duties come from label boss Marc Houle, who in true Items & Things fashion strips Nymaʼs original down to its bare bones, sprinkles it with his unique blend of experimental techno, and turns the bass up to eleven. What results is a mix as eerie as it is groove driven: its building lead lines, stuttering 909 hats, and synth eccentricities a flawless expansion on the funk of the original.

A Motor City, Berlin, London hybrid, Ryan Crosson is a complex artistic creature. Equal parts energetic, down to earth Detroit native and ultra-refined, musical aesthete, Ryan has one ear to the club and one ear far, far beyond. Known the world over for shape shifting, shoulder shaking tracks on groundbreaking labels including M_nus, Supplement Facts, Spectral, Wagon Repair, and his own Visionquest, Ryan’s production and sampling practices depart from the worlds of house or techno by referencing musique concrète, Downtown New York funk, and East African jazz. Born and raised on a steady diet of post-apocalyptic landscapes, dark warehouses, and the sounds of Plastikman, Matthew Dear, Magda, and Villalobos, Ryan’s DJ sets aim to expand the horizon of possibility without sacrificing dance music’s core element of sweaty, hedonistic fun. His unique musical vocabulary and tireless dedication insure him a place in the dynasty of forward-thinking techno transplants.

Alongside Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves, Ryan is responsible for the day-to-day running of Visionquest, one of dance music’s most cherished and eclectic imprints. Ryan and his partners in Visionquest have honed a whole new landscape of lush, organic techno and esoteric leftfield electronica. In 2014, Ryan oversaw the construction of Visionquest’s newest venture—their digital arm and sub-label Brachtune. Full of off-kilter, loopy and positively circus vibes, the tracks showcased on Brachtune will remind long-time friends and fans of Ryan’s early morning sets in the notorious “Tesh Club” basement.

In addition to his work with Visionquest, 2014 was Ryan’s most prolific production career yet, with a staggering number of releases on labels such as Darkroom Dubs, Mobilee, and . Highlights include Bricolage, Ryan’s hotly anticipated first EP for Visionquest, especially the labyrinthine, twisted “Club Chimes,” a heady collaboration with long-time friend and fellow Visionquest artist Cesar Merveille. The year also saw Don’t Be Left Out, a mix CD with another fellow traveler Matt Tolfrey, which has been described as “deep, diverse, and exciting all the way through.”
