Mixed down with headphones 🎧, volume faders, and EQs 🎛️—and it was a ride.
I had so much fun with this one. Practiced a few rounds to lock in the phrasing, really letting those beats, sounds, and words dance with each other. It felt so good to connect deeper with the music—like actually knowing it, not just playing it.

Beatmatching wasn’t the hard part this time; it was more about feeling into it. I thought I’d rely on the jump knob, but instead I let the songs tease the body, flirt with the groove... and damn, that felt bomb AF.

PhDj Bootcamp Homework Week 3

1. “Rave de Favela” – @majorlazer, @mclanofficial, @oficial-anitta, @whoisbeam
2:05 – started looping at 2:25 and used hot cues to stay in rhythm.

2. “Raw” (Tony Romera Extended Mix) – @julionavasmusic, @gustavobravetti 
5:30 – started playing with texture and energy, letting the track build naturally around 5:55.

3. “Mantra” – @monkeysafari
10:30 – worked intentionally with phrasing, beat matching, and EQs. Used hot cues to weave transitions.

4. “Waddaday” – @claudevonstroke, @zombiediscosquad
11:40 – continued focusing on phrasing, EQ control, and staying attuned to the pulse.

5. “Trespass 2019” (Mark Knight Extended Mix) – @booka-shade, @markknight
15:17 – slow, steady transition with EQ manipulation; drop hits at 16:01.

19:30 – played with phrasing and EQs; mix got a bit muddy, but it was a good lesson in clarity and patience.

22:20 – coming off the previous transition, I felt flustered and lost my grounding a bit, which showed in the blend.


This one was a doozy. The phrasing felt harder to align, and the transitions didn’t land as clean as I wanted. It had me questioning what I’ve been doing and also realizing how much deeper this craft goes.

Still, there were moments where I dropped into real play... swapping EQs, letting songs tease and dance with each other, and feeling those intersections of rhythm. Listening back, I can hear where I could relax more into the pocket instead of trying to control it.

When I played it back, my boyfriend walked in—and before I knew it, we were dancing in the kitchen. That moment brought me back into my body. The pulse became something I could feel instead of think about. My shoulders started to move, loosening tension and dropping me deeper into my back body.

This one definitely reminded me of WHY I am doing this:  Some days it feels smooth; other days it’s gritty as hell. But that’s where the growth is.

PhDj Bootcamp Homework Week 4 (Mix Assignment 3)

After a couple days of practice, practice, PRACTICE, it was time to record — and this time, move with my mix (per Jess's homework for me).

For some reason, this crate of songs just wasn’t landing for me. (Which is weird, because I love music.) Maybe my brain was overworking the assignment, but man — this one felt tough.

It’s early Sunday morning. The world feels slow, quiet. My body’s saying “Ground TF down,” but my mind wants to MOVE. I wanted the mix to feel like a cinematic adventure — a kind of Hero’s Journey through sound. But then I caught myself thinking, “Bro, this doesn’t need to be your masterpiece. Just focus.”

So I did.
We got a new crate, and honestly, I didn’t vibe with most of the songs. But hey — it’s an assignment, right? "Get over it, gurl." Still, I noticed these little numbers next to the songs — 3s, 6s — and it threw me.
I caught myself wondering: “How is my 3 someone else’s 6?”
Started experimenting more with FX, feeling how each tweak affected my body — and wow, the sensations got INTENSE. Lower body lit up, lower chakras buzzing. At one point, I literally felt like I might throw up. Like something was rising through my system that wasn’t just about music.

It made me question — is The Score just personal preference? What’s my true preference? And why did I instantly feel that little twinge of ‘am I doing this wrong?’ when I saw the numbers?

Maybe that’s part of what this whole process is teaching me — not just how to mix, but how to listen — to the tracks, to my body, to that inner voice that keeps showing up every time I step behind the decks.

Started blending in the next track around 4:50 — LFG.

2. “Sonder (Original Mix)” — Barry Can’t Swim
At 4:50, I began bringing this one in by switching the pre-set Filter FX on “Sonder” to -50% and slowly swapping it out with The 9 Heavens.

3. “Midnight Starring” — Busiswa, DJ Maphorisa, DJ Tira, Moonchild Sanelly
7:24 — Opened with a little loop action and played around with the MID EQs.

4. “The Panther” — Lazarusman, Mele
12:13 — Tried out some Reverb FX and added a couple of loops for texture.

5. “Mallificent” — Fernando Malli
17:00 — Focused on lining up the phrasing and balancing the EQs. Could’ve lifted the highs a little more here.

6. “Heat” — JUNO (DE)
19:11 — The ARC. Those drums are SO hard to lock in — that drop gave me some serious finger anxiety.

7. “Heaven Takes You Home (Moojo Remix)” — Swedish House Mafia, Connie Constance, Moojo
22:32 — EQs actually felt good for once, so I didn’t touch them. The transition felt smooth — like taking a deep MF-ing breath.
28:17 — Mixing into the next track was tricky, but using FX to fade and slightly adjusting the BPM helped smooth it out.

8. “Wild” — Tourist
28:30 — Getting that beat lined up… holy sh*t. DONE.

PhDj Module 1 Week 2 Homework Assignment (Score 1)

Whew. This one kicked my butt.
I usually DJ standing up, so I thought this was gonna be a cakewalk… but honestly, I think I slipped on some of that cake and face-planted a couple times. 😂

When I first started this mix, I made a deal with myself: record it straight through — mistakes and all. No stopping, no editing. And yep, I hear the mistakes. I feel them. But I also love how certain transitions somehow stitched themselves together right when I was about to pass out.

At first, I didn’t even like half these tracks. Maybe three or four actually resonated with me. But then I remembered — this is the work. This is what we’re here for. So I told myself again: press play.

The whole thing felt edgy and gritty, but also raw and real — exactly where I’m at right now.

This mix was born on a down home backyard makeshift dance floor where perfection died and awkwardness THRIVED. Someone was like, “Ryan, BITCH, fix the vibe,” threw me the aux like a lawsuit, and I caught it with delusional confidence.

We open with “African Love” all cute, then “Whispers” drags everyone straight into their trauma like “SURPRISE, HOE.”
“On te l’avait dit” busts in like a feral disco goblin and refuses to leave.
By “Move Your Body”, I’m sweating, thriving, and throwing transitions the universe DID NOT approve. (Nor do I)

Meanwhile I’m thinking, “Ryan… girl… blink twice if you need help!”
And the dance floor is like, “BITCH why does this SWEET MESS… WORK?!”

It’s giving sassy off beat hips, dirty healing, and zero apologies.

SCORE MIX 1 (Cringe)

I had to step away from this mix more than once… not out of avoidance, but because the “pleasure” I was supposed to be chasing felt completely out of reach. Holidays, work, my nervous system doing the absolute most… it all had me tight, overthinking, trying to perform pleasure instead of actually feeling it.

my pleasure wasn’t in the doing…it was in the letting go.
Letting go of control.
Letting go of getting it “right.”
Letting go of the deadline gripping me by the throat.

most honest pleasure I found in this assignment was saying,
“fAck it… fAck me… let life have me for a sec,”
and letting the mix come when it wanted to.
Even submitting it required a little surrender kink/a soft melt into
okay gurl, this is what wants to exist right now. 

Setting:
For my spacey afro-punk dolls and their cosmic besties/the ones floating through the week a little heavy, a little glitter-damaged.

We’re in a dim, star-dusted room where gravity feels optional and everyone’s aura is leaking just enough to be honest.

Intention:
A release portal.
A place to throw dat azz in a healing circle, shake off the residue of the day.

Score and Tech Intentions:
For this Score, I gave my 3 section more space to spark the body and let the energy rise naturally. I added one undeniable 4 peak to lift the room, then landed us in a heavenly, soul-forward 5 so the whole mix could feel like a real end-of-day release (at least for who I was ‘playing’ for).

I also focused on cleaner layering… choosing what leads the story and what supports it.

And huge gratitude to Karen for her words; her feedback helped me shape this mix with more clarity, intention, and ease… oh yeah and pleasure, lol 😝!

This set drops into a conscious club that’s already warm… bodies open, sweat earned. I kept it uptempo and a little fun, letting the groove ride just long enough to build pressure before pushing into a clear high point, then cracking it open so the room stayed dancing instead of settling. I’m still learning the score and practicing trusting my ear through my body… listening to what the floor, the nervous system, and the vibration/cells are actually doing, especially around pacing and layering. The intention was to close one party cleanly and pass the sweetness to the next.
