I was at Yetep SF and while he was playing I felt so much love in the room not like romantic love but like that type of love that your dog gives you whenever you feed him or scratch him behind his ears. For all of you out there currently in relationships (Happy Valentines Day) and those who are celebrating single awareness day, I hope this mix brings out some fond memories of a different time in your lives. Stages Of A Relationship 2: First Date Ft. LONELY.HAN

Got the chance to catch up with our boy Foxen and learned so much about him. Make sure you peep this beautiful mix, full of friends and unreleased id's.

Q. What's the meaning behind your alias "foxen"?

A. Sadly there's not much meaning when I first made up the name, I was into Giraffage, Trippy Turtle, and Cashmere Cat at the time so I just made up an animal related name. In a different life I'd be Foxy Foxen. I'm mostly trying to find meaning in my name now, but I like the way it sounds, like it's both soft and sharp, kinda like how my music can be.

Q. Who is your biggest musical influence?

A. I hate this question because I can't name a single one artist, but I have groups of artist that were huge influences on my music

One group, which was during like 2009-2012 was Nujabes, Flying Lotus, and Dilla, I think a lot of people were really influenced by this specific group of producers, it had a huge emphasis in drums and lush instrumental and that really shaped how I wanted my music to sound. Nujabes is probably the root of my music though, he's the reason I even got into instrumentals and wanted to start making beats, the emotion, movement, and feel in all his music was one of a kind. 

The other group that t's been 2013 till now is the future bass holy trinity of Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, and Flume. Kind of like the first group there was a huge emphasis on drums, emotive feel, and experimental rhythms and sound design. The first time I ever heard Rustie - Slasherr, I knew the kind of style of music I wanted to make.

There's still so many influences for every single little thing I do in music I could probably keep going on and on, but for the core basis of my music, these two groups were my biggest influences, even though in my opinion I don' think my music really reflects that. 

Q. What's the ultimate goal for the foxen project?

A. At this point, I feel like the ultimate goal would really be create a body of work like an album, something that really solidifies me as an artist, like the same way Worlds is so deeply tied with Porter. Going to the teamLab digital art museums in Japan was really inspiring for me too, there's so much we can do with technology and it keeps getting cheaper and more accessible as time goes on, I can't wait to so see how we can utilize visuals and music more during shows and event spaces. I really love art, technology, and music and I really wanna create something in each of these spaces and tie it all together.
