Malzof at Chillits 2025

Recorded live from within Black Oak(or khotishohol) Ranch in Mendocino County, California - in the historic land of the Northern Pomo, Coastal Pomo/Miwok, Cahto, and Yuki Peoples from 4:10 AM - 5:40 AM PST on Sept 13, 2025 - right after Neonlichter and before Kiernan Laveaux.

Coincidentally this slot time would coincide with 1-year since my dad’s funeral of September 13, 2024. After his passing, I would recover all of the records from his and my mom’s joint collection. Filled with folk music, pretty guitar and instrumentals, classical and comedic sketches, and more. 

To my joyful surprise, one of the records I would encounter in the collection, is one I recognized from my own collection of records: Environments Disc 1: The Psychologically Ultimate Seashore / Optimum Aviary, one of the pinnacle records of the Environments field recordings series. This one presents ocean sounds from Brighton Beach, Coney Island and birds from the Bronx Zoo. Before I left for Chillits, I tossed this record in my tote. I didn’t want to travel with too many records for this trip, but I knew this one had to make the cut.

In Cairn, Düngfelder’s focus on atmosphere and perception meets Beaudoin’s concern with time and memory, creating a dialogue where each sound becomes a trace left for the other to follow. What remains is a series of sonic markers, small monuments to attention, letting listeners linger on in the fragile continuations of sound.

Fluid Audio is proud to present 'arthur & jeremias', the forthcoming album from Danish composer and sound artist øjeRum - a quiet, introspective work named after two characters from The Castle, Franz Kafka’s unfinished and haunting novel.

Like Kafka’s world, 'arthur & jeremias' exists in a space of uncertainty and longing. It drifts between presence and absence, where meaning is sensed rather than stated. The album unfolds as a slow sonic exploration, fragments of memory, half-remembered rooms, and corridors that seem to lead nowhere and everywhere at once.

Dusted loops circle gently, worn at the edges. Tape hiss breathes between notes. Electronic phrases appear like passing thoughts, only to dissolve again into ambience. There is a deep sense of nostalgia throughout, not for a specific place or time, but for something just out of reach, hovering at the edge of consciousness.

Rather than telling a story outright, 'arthur & jeremias' invites the listener to inhabit a mood. Repetition becomes ritual. Small imperfections are left intact, giving the music a fragile, human quality, as though the recordings themselves are artifacts uncovered from another era.

This is music that rewards patience and stillness. It asks for attentive listening, for surrender to its quiet pull. Like The Castle, the album resists resolution, finding beauty in ambiguity and tenderness in restraint.

The album is mastered by Ian Hawgood, whose sensitive and understated approach preserves the music’s intimacy and dynamic range, allowing the dusted loops, tape hiss, and fragile melodic fragments to remain unpolished and alive - faithful to the album’s quiet emotional core.

Released through Fluid Audio, 'arthur & jeremias' will appear as a limited, hand-assembled physical edition, created with the same care and attention to detail that defines the label’s ethos - a tactile companion to an intimate and reflective listening experience.

This mix is a selection of this year’s releases I put out on mappa. I wove into it a few field recordings I made myself, or together with my partner Michaela. I wanted to speak about a phenomenon that has fascinated me for a long time, and that is becoming more and more present in my life. It’s the way in which the releases I listen to over and over shape my emotional world, and shift the way I hear and perceive the world I move through. How, in certain tracks, I suddenly catch a glimpse of places I know, memories, scents, joys, or forgotten fears.

How the swamp behind my hometown feels different now—ever since I heard Adela Mede’s howling, which sits so close to the local frog choir. The boundaries blur completely, and sometimes I can’t tell what’s just an echo from some album, what’s a real memory of a creek in northern Romania, what’s the bubbling of volcanic mud on one of the Aeolian islands, and what’s the delicate crunchy electronics of Olli Aarni.

And the voices I hear when I wake from a dream at night—are they my neighbors, or have I heard them already in the worlds of Julek ploski, Plume Girl, Richard Hronský or Areliz Ramos? After ten years, I realized this is the driving force behind all this solitary work: this quiet sound-overflow that connects worlds so different from each other, forming unexpected little constellations of meaning.

"This started as an exercise in tone and texture but I ended up adding a patchwork of media clips to give the mix a loose structure. Every year since about 2010, Mike Jedlicka and I have kept up a tradition: he creates a vinyl-only mix of his favourite records, and I share it on Headphone Commute as part of our end-of-year celebrations. And yes, this is his 15th installment! As always, Mike keeps me in check by navigating the releases of the past year across a variety of genres, even throwing in a hip-hop track or two, which makes this journey all the more exciting.
