Following on from his Tamoanchan EP inspired by the landscapes and diversity of Mexico, El Búho presents "Chinampa" - the twin EP this time inspired by the sprawling Mexico City or Distrito Federal. Chinampa comes from the Nahuatl work for an old agricultural practice of growing crops on the lake beds in the Valley of Mexico, often on floating islands that can still be seen today if you take one of the beautiful trajinera canal boats in the iconic area of Xochimilco. Though the album is a dedication to "DF´s" urban sprawl, it digs down deeper to find inspiration in the cities inherent ties to water and to ways of life - past and present. 

"Salto de Agua", now a bustling metro stop used to mark the end of the ancient Chapultepec aqueduct - one of the series of canals that allowed the Aztecs to navigate the city. Meanwhile, "Al Tianguis" is a nod to the city´s renowned market´s (tianguis), a tradition that has existed for hundreds of years and remains a crucial part of city life and culture. "Pasale" is a word that you hear all over the city, but especially on its public transport system like the infamous green pesero buses that race through the city streets, booming out classic cumbias or banda and the unwritten rules of traveling on these beasts. The final track, "Temporada de Lluvia", was inspired by the immense downpours during the city´s rainy season from June to September when for a few hours in the afternoon the city is transformed back into its ancient watery past. The city swells with water as the major roads around the city become flooded canals and chaos descends. 

UK born, Robin Perkins AKA El Búho is now based in Paris but spent the last two years living, working, playing and producing music in México City.

This week I released Chinampa, my second EP inspired by my time spent in Mexico - this time a journey through the urban sprawl of Mexico City.

While we were finishing the EP the French producer Yeahman offered to do a remix and came up with the super refreshing remix of "Salto de Agua" - sprinkled with guitar licks, percussion and organic sounds.

We have noticed one thing over the years of playing shows, meeting artists, exchanging music and having conversations with people all over the world. That we are surrounded by a community of musicians, producers and music lovers which acts as an inspiring, uniting force. For that reason this fourth Shika Shika compilation is called Union or Unión: "the action of joining together or the fact of being joined together".

These are 13 tracks of music without borders, music that unites, music that brings together different styles, rhythms, influences, languages and cultures to create something richer, something fresh, something different. That is how music evolves and has always evolved, uniting sounds and creating something new. 

We are really happy to present lots of artists who are new to the Shika Shika collective alongside some old friends. Hard to categorise so we let the tracks speak for themselves.

Born Otello Ermanno Profazio in Rende, Province of Cosenza, Profazio debuted in 1953, participating at the radio musical contest "Il microfono è vostro" with the song "U' Ciucciu". A divulgator of traditional folk music of the South Italy, particularly of Sicily and Calabria, in 1964 he got a large critical acclaim with the album Il treno del sole , consisting of Ignazio Buttitta's poems set to music; the album also marked the start of a progressive evolution of his style, which became more original and distinguishing. His career had its peak in the 1970s, with the success of the albums Il brigante Musolino (a musical recount of life events of Giuseppe Musolino)

The Shipibo (indigenous people from the peruvian amazon) see and hear geometric patterns in nature and reproduce the designs on their clothing and paint them on their houses and boats. The Shipibo believe the patterns are healing on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels.

Every design carries its own specific meaning. For example,
to bring healing, wisdom, protection or to attract abundance.
These ‘artful prayers’ can be sung by the Shipibo because each design also functions as a musical score, called an ‘Icaro’.

The design element and the ‘Icaro’ operate
cohesively to carry the power of the healing
or blessing.
