Napoleon Coste (Amondans 1805 - Paris 1883)

Napoleon Coste's father served in the Army of Napoleon Bonaparte and continued to defend the Dutch city of Delfzijl, quite successfully, against the newly established powers long after Napoleon Bonaparte had been defeated. 
Luckily his son, despite his first name and early martial experience in Delfzijl, didn't take to warfare and, equally successful, picked up the guitar instead of the bayonet.

A simple theme from Anton Diabelli (1781-1858)inspired Beethoven to write 33 piano variations (The Diabelli Variations). It is unclear if Beethoven intended to honor his friendship with Diabelli or crush him with this display of superior creativity. Maybe he just wanted to make a buck (he was payed by the variation)

In this light one more variation on a jazz guitar of Diabelli's Andante Sostenuto will not hurt.

Fernando Sor, Barcelona 1778 – Paris 1839

As a composer Sor swayed between the Classical, that he loved, and the Romantic, that he lived. Sor wrote only four large scale guitar Sonatas. This one is the second. Although it starts with classical confidence and energy (C-major!), it is driven by some troubling episodes of harmonic disarray and romantic alienation. Finally Sors seems to resolve to a certain optimism but it's no longer matter of course.
