After a five-year hiatus, Isaka returns with ‘Elytra’, a work exploring the increasingly blurred lines between organic and artificial realities. In her self-defined 'hyperbass', 'Elytra' blends low-end grit with a melodic pop sheen, morphing erratic rhythms, intricate sound design and hyperpop vocals that balance formal sensibilities and visceral club energy. 
Isaka underwent the transformative experience of medical transition during her move to Berlin and this radical change emerges in the thematic exploration of Elytra. 
Isaka uses insect moulting as a metaphor for the cyclical, often traumatic process of metamorphosis and the EP’s exploration of adaptation and articulation where skin is not only a boundary of the self, but also the interface for our surroundings. 
Themes of evolving identity are woven not only into the music but also into the visual art, zine & custom website accompanying the release. A different character represents each of the tracks, brought to life through a deep iterative process involving collages, sketches, and an array of AI-assisted 3D imagery. Limited-edition electronic sculptures will also be produced for ‘Elytra’.

Tracks in focus

Bubbly textures and frenzied drum cuts move side-by-side with NPC inspired vocal chops in opening track Slang Overload. Made in collaboration with TRYCE over an intense three-day session in 2023, it’s a nod towards glitch-hop revival with elements of UK Bass, packed with meticulously sculpted and destroyed sounds.

In Circuit Shaker we enter metallic low-end stepper territory: celestial tripped-out highs and a driving low end. We are cohabiting with lesbian androids at a picnic. With its off-kilter grooves and tender strangeness, Circuit Shaker embodies the inherent weirdness of intimacy—the paradoxical freedom of losing yourself when the boundaries blur between who's wearing who. The track, which first began in 2018, is a footwork, house, and electro-inspired tune which transitions between two sections at 120 and 160 BPM through polyrhythmic syncopation.

Isaka and Enayet combine for the third track, NYC 2016, a wigged-out hard hitter where drums are the main character. NYC 2016 is the ultimate DJ tool—a sonic exoskeleton whose essence straddles alienation and empowerment. Forged through countless late-night sessions with Enayet between 2016 and 2017, this track embodies the raw energy of a city’s underground dance scene where jackhammer kicks and clattering snares assault the senses. 

7Qubit explores dehumanization through platform capitalism and is alive with bugs and the quirks of  the obsessive virtualisation of the self. Imagined through a 15/4 time signature grime beat and echoes of malfunctioning code, Isaka hints at our endangered humanity. Isaka’s vocals about missing her chatbot girlfriend are processed through AI models and auto-tune, blurring the line between the organic and the synthetic. 

The final track on ‘Elytra’ takes you to the edge where all the layers fall away and what remains is the raw and unadorned self. Glittering ethereal textures are underpinned by an engulfing bass section that reverberates against the edges of the song. With its poignant melodies and delicate yet impactful percussion, Precipice is a meditation on a moment of self-realization. The track builds towards an overwhelming wall of sound before dropping into a stark sample: “Being trans… is spiritual.” Featuring quotes from Hunter Schafer’s character Jules in Euphoria, processed through an AI model trained on Isaka’s voice, this track explores the complexities of identity and self-discovery.

Digital Hundebiss is back, even though it's not Bandcamp Friday—because not even Bandcamp wants us rich. To be completely fair, it's not even Friday.

"Tough Choices" is a 167 BPM drumfunk-influenced percussive exercise, layered with Assyouti's signature distorted vocal samples and a roaring bassline. This high-impact combination of texture and rhythm is sure to feed hungry sound systems. 

Meanwhile, "Mister Blister" rolls in at a brisk 100 BPM, delivering a double-time momentum that drives the track forward with relentless force, exuding a sense of urgency and energy.

Slang Overload

Plasma Sources marks its 5th release with Cortical’s debut EP, Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes. Pulling from both the extreme fringes of experimental music and the minimalistic tendencies of the UK bass continuum, the duo’s much-awaited first release acts as the locus point between dance floor sensibility and sonic exploration in its most immersive, visceral sense. 

Cortical are world builders first and foremost. With backgrounds rooted as much in the visual arts as audio, the duo’s live AV show has already garnered critical acclaim after standout performances at Sonár and Lunchmeat. Coupling this with their list of past collaborators - which includes the likes of Holly Herndon, Arca and Skrillex - and it becomes easy to see why there’s so much hype around Cortical right now. Indeed, this EP is the culmination of months of building excitement amongst those in the know, as fragments of raw footage captured from Cortical’s shows begin to amass on social media. 

Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes itself feels like the auditory equivalent of a fragmentary existence forming, fragmenting and reforming again. Noise and distortion act as integral threads throughout the EP, but on Telúrica, they takes centre stage. Brittle percussive calls give way to a thick wall of bass-laden, cinematic viscerality which hits the listener almost as hard as the ensuing rhythmic carnage which erupts halfway through. 
Mortar, immediately fires away into more rhythmic madness, as elements of dubstep, metal and grime coalesce into blasted kick patterns which sound like the contractions of an eldritch machine’s digestive tract. Noise-tainted bass tones take over, tearing in and out of reality as Mortar progresses into deeper territory.

Up next, Shiny Surgery provides a respite, with electro-tinged drippings of lasers and wet gloops lifting the listener into a more sanitised and lighter space than its predecessors. Cortical’s extreme musical influences are still at play here with their signature eroded bass weight and splintered percussion on display, but in a more restrained sense. As the halfway point comes in, so too does the most introspective section of Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes, as cinematic floating pads de-sterilise the space. 

Finishing things up is the namesake of the EP and arguably the most anthemetic listen of the release. Demented vocal chants call out across a disintegrating claustrophobic space, before grime kicks and fragmented breakbeat loops explode into existence, demanding full dance floor attention.

Merlin Modulaw's latest project, ‚Lost & Found‘, is a EP that spans six carefully crafted tracks, pushing the boundaries of contemporary club music with a blend of genres and textures. The release highlights Modulaw’s unique production style, combining slower grooves, raw club sounds, and sharp, metallic textures to create a sound both gritty and immersive. Among the standout features of the EP are a powerful collaboration with Estoc and innovative remixes by genre-blending artists Manuka Honey and Xzavier Stone, each adding their distinct touch to the project.

This two-track EP creatively reimagines the same core hook across two distinct genres. The first track is a hard-hitting, trap-infused anthem, layering thumping 808s with sharp hi-hats and aggressive rhythms, delivering a raw, bass-heavy vibe. The second track flips the script, taking a more experimental approach with intricate breaks, glitchy textures, and warped basslines, pushing the boundaries of sound design. Both versions showcase the versatility of the hook, bridging the worlds of hip hop and experimental bass music in an engaging, innovative way.

Death is certain, life is not. And both are available at our supermarket. 

With everything that’s happening in the world, one must wonder if there’s breaking free from it all or should they just stop trying to make sense of it. It’s a choice and it isn’t — depending on the circumstances one finds themselves in. What seemed senseless beginning to take form and what had always been solid shatters into pieces: home, family, plans, love, identity, freedom, sex, philosophy, technology, making-it, bank account, self, traumas, patterns, overcoming them, residence, conscience, morals, vodka, values, vulnerability — they have equal chances to serve as safe place or jail, wake or deliverance, life or death — go figure.

In its first release, Patar flips the table — and the cards, and the chips with it. No stake is too high to even mention it. One track and 7 versions of it, as an attempt to transgress from confusion to clarity — or maybe the other way around. Here’s an artistic experiment for you: do not brief, do not declare, do not obey, and do not fight — or do. And see what comes out of it. 

Qurgōn is a pit grave. There are dead horses in it, dead people, dead weapons, and vessels. It stinks and it’s scary. It’s a place where nothing will ever be born, or will it? It requires nothing, silently craving admiration. It only ever serves a collective memory of all the heroes and the blood-thirsty freaks alike. They are one, after all. It only is to be unbothered, looked at in awe and disgust; to be a break out on the smooth surface of the steppe’s ass.  

One artist made a call, seven responded — to dig to the bottom of that pit or touch upon its stony texture.

Here’s another experiment for you: renounce all styles and genres and go with it. Who cares, anyway? Gloomy and epic, repetitive and bass-y — oh, always bass-y. Percussion-thick, yelling, obnoxious, rich. The sound of dying, finding peace, losing it again, and returning back to the hassle. The all-penetrating sound of a baby’s cry and the last exhale of a fighter knocked out for good. Ferocious sirens needling through the layers and layers of dead horses and weapons, clanking, squelching — resonating. With the horrors and hope. With memories and fantasies. With clinging to what seems to be it — and letting go. 

Nothing is certain anymore, yet everything is clear.
