Our 275th Global Vibe Radio episode features the cerebral and captivating, deep techno sounds of Spanish label boss, producer and DJ Reeko.

Born in Oviedo (Asturias) in 1981, Juan Rico p/k/a/ Reeko is a DJ who has rapidly attained recognition other artists have taken a long time to gain. In his case, it’s not been a matter of chance or coincidence, but the result of his innate and incredible capacity to be prolific, alongside his obsession for perfection. 

Reeko finds himself, deservedly, among the elite of Hispanic and global techno. He has released huge techno productions that have charted and played by the best DJs in the world. From his first tracks and EPs released on labels as reputable as Theory, Main out, Integrale Muzique, Deafmosaic, Inceptive, Rxxistance, Trece Records, Symbolism, Planet Rhythm, Warm Up or Palicavonzvreca, to more recent releases on Soma and Semantica

Reeko’s “pathological” label/laboratory, Mental Disorder, was created in 2003 and is the imprint under which he has released a plethora of works of ever-increasing quality.

Following on from Mental Disorder was label Evidence, launched in 2005 and used by Reeko as a conductor to open up listeners, to his passion for the darkest and sickest parts of the human mind. Reeko is an integral part of the PoleGroup collective, the cream of techno formed in 2004.

Spawned from PoleGroup is the powerhouse that is Selección Natural, uniting Reeko with Oscar Mulero & Exium. The consolidation Igniting a new level of Spanish techno and craft. 201 8 brought their initial self titled LP and October 2019 their latest LP ‘Left Behind’.

Reeko has proven himself over and over again a true master of the darkest and hardest-hitting productions, slavishly followed by thousands around the world eager for a glimpse of this elusive master craftsman. For those lucky enough to be present, his is a performance that both inspires and devastates in equal measure, witnessed at Awakenings, both solo and B2B with Oscar Mulero, Berghain, Tresor, Fuse, Concrete and Fuse, and extensive touring of the USA, South America & Australasia

Honorary Mancunian natives and co-founders and residents of the infamous Meat Free parties, hailed as one of the wildest techno raves in the UK. The duo are revered in their local scene as much as they are championed by many of the artists and peers they have played alongside. With a symbiotic energy behind the decks whether at the helm at Manchester’s White Hotel, holding it down in Fabric or cruising into the early hours at Tresor, Blasha and Allatt bring it every time.

Fast and hard but always with soul, their sets are a relentless force that have blessed dancefloors such as FOLD, Printworks, Freerotation, Shelter, House of God and Dimensions Festival to name a few.

Never content to not push the boundaries of their music and of the scene, 2022 will see the launch of Frixxxion - a new inclusive space for queer techno raving in the heart of Manchester’s underground. And with acclaimed releases already on Ben Sims’ Machine and Blue Hour, expect to get even more familiar with the sound of Blasha and Allatt.

Elisa Batti is a DJ, producer and sound designer based in Amsterdam. A polyhedric artist that roots her career in a heterogeneous background, where technology, art and music come together. She is constantly pushing the boundaries of contemporary music in her projects, striving to create multidisciplinary pieces that challenge and expand its limits.

Next to her own artistry, Elisa also runs the label Immaterial Archives since 2018, where she aims to release high quality techno from well established producers and also from upcoming talents. She also curates the series V-Eclipse which supports female-identifying producers and producers within the queer community. Her sets are pure bred techno, ranging from hypnotic and deep dark to vibrant and energetic. When she plays, she always strives to add her own personal touch, leading the crowd through a journey!

Set the Mood with Dan Berg!

This week, I've invited Dan Berg to contribute an opening set for the Set the Mood series. Dan Berg delivered an excellent track selections and layered craftsmanship. As a passionate DJ and producer, Dan isn’t afraid to explore extremes, but his real fascination lies in the nuances that emerge in between. His pursuit of perfect balance often leads to the most intriguing results.

For Dan Berg, a perfect opening set is one that creates the ideal atmosphere for the night ahead. It allows him to showcase his unique style while leaving ample space for the next DJ to build upon. The balance depends heavily on the lineup and timetable. Sometimes there’s room to play with more intensity; other times, a subtler approach is necessary. At the start of the evening, it’s essential to entice people onto the dancefloor, gradually challenging them to stay captivated by the evolving energy of the music.

Dan Berg describes his style as something between hypnotic dark groove and unpolished hard techno. While difficult to pin down precisely, he simplifies it by positioning himself in that in-between space. He enjoys emphasizing percussion and prefers to follow the energy of the music and the evening rather than locking himself into a specific genre.

When asked who he’d most like to open for, Dan mentions Oscar Mulero. He feels a deep understanding of Mulero’s style and would consider it a tremendous honor, given the immense respect he holds for the artist.
