Sometimes in life, as in music, things just fall into place and a kind of magic happens. Volume 4 of The Dark Album remixes is like that. Here is found such a display of cohesive artistry that it is difficult to sum up in words the potency of the sound. Ross Harper shares his creative vision for volume 4:

"As soon as one presses play on any of these remixes, it is immediately obvious there is powerful depth in every track. Whether it is the complex multi-layered tapestry of sound in the Developer remix of Hard Patience, or the cohesive fullness of the Amorphic throbbing reshape of Narcissist, or the fast, gritty epic from DJ Emerson. And finally there is the Coast2c remix of Something New, which feels so physically unique that it is like an unknown object passing through space, effortlessly bringing with it new possibilities."

Developer has a mature, crystal clean and immediately recognisable style that emanates through the original Hard Patience loops. Set across multiple layers of sound and space this is a hypnotic journey that reveals more delights every time it is played. A DJ’s dream come true as it offers so much texture to any mix. The shining dry snare hit is as penetrative as it is orgasmic.

In 2022 Vince Watson birthed his Amorphic sound and Harper was over the moon when an Amorphic reshape was suggested. This is womb techno, from the deep, dark depths where all things are created from nothingness. Throbbing, expanding, moving, yet constantly cycling back within itself and rediscovering new forms of identity within its own oneness. 100% mid set peak time techno for the most tuned in of crowds.

DJ Emerson takes Deep Life and roasts it in his gritty percussive haberdashery. While at the same time throwing in a bunch of hooligans from a Beastie Boys or The Prodigy stadium concert. One can feel the crowd moshing as the Deep Life bass booms. Could this even be described as techno? It’s hard to say. In contrast to the hooligans DJ Emerson also shares a group of dark voices which appear to pronounce a sense of overshadowing protection.

Coast2c is the alias for Sofia Acosta, a talent that has been recognised already by DJ Mag, RA and Mixmag Mexico. In her remix of Something New this attention is certainly justified. The Coast2c remix is a disturbing sound that is ripe to rip a heavy tear in the vortex, Harper shares his reflection on working with Acosta…

“As Acosta shared working sounds and ideas across cyberspace, what started as a collection of powerful but almost formless Coast2c signatures, gradually over a number of weeks grew into a very, very strong and provocative structure. The final creation takes the shape of a textural sound weapon of sorts, emanating an alien vibration, beautifully obscure, something that simply doesn’t fit in but also will have to be accepted, this is Something New indeed.”
