… and there’s that wonderful voice again.

This has a wonderfully complex instrumental.

Even the rhythm is complex, and that’s before looking at the melodies built upon it. 

There are definitely influences of funk, jazz and soul in there, and getting the charts right for this piece would have been quite an effort, but would have been equally rewarding.

The clear bass lines allow for her voice to come over the instrumental, and effortlessly.

The lyrics are positive, but determined, they are focussed on feelings, especially comparisons – sour and sweet, the first and second high.

All this is within a context of a dark time’s fury.

The second time may well be nothing like the first, but equally, the first high gets an extra boost from its novelty.

This is a beautiful and excellent song from any perspective.
