In The Box | Baliyay | Farhan Saeed | Saad Sultan

Rumz (originally from the Arabic verb 'to make a sign'). Literally Rumz means: a sign, hint, nod, wink, insinuation, or  innuendo. In mystical terms, as used in this song, it refers to the secret or hidden signs shared between two lovers (i.e. man and God).

The plural form Rumzaan used here refers to the whole set of hidden and enigmatic signs exchanged between the two lovers.

This Saraiki song is 200-300 year old, and has been performed by many great folk singers of Pakistan over the years.

Saraiki (سرائیکی Sarā'īkī, also spelt Siraiki, or Seraiki) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Lahnda (Western Punjabi) group spoken in the south-western half of the province of Punjab in Pakistan. It was previously known as Multani, after its main dialect. 
Saraiki is the first language of over 20 million people in Pakistan, ranging across southern Punjab, southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and border regions of northern Sindh and eastern Balochistan.

English Translation:
When did this secret love begin? 
I have begun to have feelings for my Sanwal (the beloved, typically the Divine)

In The Box | Abhi Thehro | Mujeeb Mustafa | Saad Sultan

Ghazal is a poetic form with rhyming couplets and a refrain, each line sharing the same meter. All couplets are thematically and emotionally autonomous. Ghazal in music is often mistakenly considered as a music genre and associated with a typical tabla/harmonium music arrangement but any poetry can be sung in any tune without a limitation of music arrangement. 
Here, Ali Aftab Saeed is performing a 'do ghazla', written by Master Altaf. Do ghazla is an amalgamation of two ghazals on the same meter. 
Punjabis have a way to minuscule their troubles by poking fun and ridiculing themselves, this adds up to their cultural uniqueness. 


This song is an ode to a wife who left her house after an argument with her husband. The simple yet graceful nine stanzas offer a glimpse of a home where the man has been left alone. The kitchen is overflowing with utensils, her slippers are still lying outside, as if she has stepped out for a moment. In typical Punajbi style, social commentary is interspersed with tongue in cheek descriptions of the man's grief for his departed partner. He cannot meet anyone because the city is dark due to load shedding. He compares her tears to Rawalpindi's infamous Naala Lai. He observes that Ravi doesn't have a drop of water in it, yet Gulshan Ravi is drowning. In the end, he expresses simple faith that things will turn out all right, asking her to come back because it's a beautiful evening.

'Ae Muhabbat' is a popular ghazal from 1930s, written by Shakeel Badayuni, sung by great classical singers like Ustad Barkat Ali Khan & Begum Akhtar. Different sources quote different names as the composer but there's no authentic source to confirm.

Ustad Raza Ali Khan is the grandson of the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the 'Kasur Gharana', who is one of the most celebrated classical singer of the region. The Kasur gharana is considered to be the pioneer of the old school ghazal gaiki. 
Ustad Raza Ali Khan has been very kind to do a rendition of this iconic ghazal, in a way that will connect to the new generation, while keeping the authenticity in tact.
