The popularity of Brazilian music from the 60s, 70s and 80s has experienced quite the renaissance; artists such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai, Joyce et al, have become household names to an international audience passionate about global sounds. However, even for die-hard fans and collectors of Brazilian music of the past, discovering contemporary Brazilian artists is not always easy, nor accessible. But, if you know where to look, you will see that there is a resurgence well underway that can be epitomised by an exciting new wave of Brazilian artists beginning to break through and gather momentum overseas. It’s with thanks to Sound and Colours, a website devoted to promoting Latin American music and culture, that we can help shine a light on one particular collective, bursting with creativity and camaraderie.

‘Hidden Waters: Strange and Sublime Sounds of Rio de Janeiro’ is compiled by Joe Osborne (founder of specialist Brazilian music platform Brazilian Wax) and Russ Slater (editor at large of Sounds and Colours). Focusing solely on the 'Rio Scene', rather than taking on the mammoth task of tackling Brazil as a whole, this collection presents 20-plus ground-breaking artists selected from Rio’s resurgent music scene. By presenting a snapshot into the pulse of the city and the vibrant musicians that live in it, ‘Hidden Waters’ collates tracks from a wide spectrum of musical genres from the avant-garde edge to bossa nova, samba, Candomblé, lo-fi rock, jazz and funk.

‘Hidden Waters’ showcases musicians such as iconic Rio mainstays Negro Leo & Ava Rocha, Brazilian jazz upstart Antônio Neves, critically lauded Avant-pop trailblazer Thiago Nassif, breakthrough artists Ana Frango Elétrico and Letrux, lo-fi psych rocker Lê Almeida, plus the Latin Grammy-winning Bala Desejo who are set to explode onto the world stage. 

The music featured on ‘Hidden Waters’ is unequivocally Brazilian, swelling with samba, bossa nova, funk, and jazz. But it’s within the album's blend; from sunny psychedelia to dusky synth-pop via experimental electronics, that marks the compilation as the sound of modern, multicultural Rio. Fans of Brazil’s fertile 60s and 70s will spot the antecedents in Tropicália. Not only in the experimentation but also through the similar political context: back in the late 60s there was Brazil’s military dictatorship, and up until the end of 2022 it was Bolsonaro’s censorious premiership. Here are a group of musicians writing and reflecting on another colourful chapter within Brazil’s musical history.

This comprehensive compilation comes with album artwork designed by Rio music’s leading album artwork designer, Caio Paiva. It features essays by professor and music critic Bernardo Oliveira and music journalist Leonardo Lichote, plus extensive notes on each track by the artists themselves.

In one of these creative hangouts between being on the road and being on stage, the Asian dream team and German ambassadors for Global Bass Music, SYMBIZ, invented a word expressing general positivity and summing up the experience of traveling around the globe: "YEERUH!" (Yeah-Ru). 

Shaped into a song, "YEERUH"! is a steaming hot Global Bass anthem — Invented on the road, produced in the heart of Berlin and put to live for the first time in a township in Zimbabwe.

Now, together with three diverse remixes by Germany's bass-heaviest producer "Bukez Finest", Berlin-based Reggae innovator "Teka", and Peruvian Global Bass duo "Dengue Dengue Dengue", YEERUH! will be made available on SYMBIZ' very Bandcamp-site and in all stores worldwide on Friday, June 13th 2014.

Gypsy No Gypsy

Peace & Rhythm and Estereo are proud to release a special 70gr. edition two track 7” 45 from renowned Austin, Texas psychedelic cumbia band, Money Chicha (featuring members of Grupo Fantasma and Brownout). Side A is a highly danceable chichadelic instrumental version of the breakbeat classic, Babe Ruth's “The Mexican”, cut live in the studio at Lechehouse. Trippy guitar and organ float atop swaths of tropical rhythm and deep bass. The iconic Spaghetti Western cowboy surf riffs are epic and come to an ecstatic crescendo, shimmering notes border-hopping through an imaginary southwestern Mexican-American desert by way of the Amazon. Side B, “Enfermera” (Nurse), is a thrilling and gritty cover version of the lesser-known 1970s cumbia beat track by Peru’s Los Ilusionistas with urgent vocals by the multi-talented Alex Chávez of Chicago’s alt-Latinx band Dos Santos. Two classic tunes covered with a fresh, invigorating take on the tropical psychedelia of 1970s Peru.

Sacha mixes different styles and genres together during his sets (Anything from 30s Swing Jazz to the latest remixes, obscurities to well known Classics). Sacha adapts his set for each new occasion. 

That said, Sacha is reputed for being one of the pioneers and specialists of Balkan Gypsy, Electro Swing and Global Beats djing in the UK. He co-founded and was the resident DJ of “Stranger than Paradise”, the legendary 16 year running Gypsy Burlesque monthly event. Sacha now holds residencies at Rowans, El Pastor, Casa / Plaza Pastor and at the Magic Garden.

His mix "(S)winging it" is in the Top 3 most played Electro Swing mixes on Soundcloud, with over a million plays now.

He has performed at events like the Electro Swing Club (Paris), Electro Swing Revolution (Berlin), Electro Swing River (Prague), White Mink (London), Party like Gatsby (Copenhagen), Rumpus, Secret Cinema, Morning Gloryville, Goulash Disko, Anti-Tapas, White Mischief, Movimientos, Small World NYE and the London Burlesque Festival. 

Sacha has shared the bill with the biggest acts in his field, artists like Caravan Palace, Parov Stelar, Caro Emerald, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Boban Markovic, Shantel, Balkan Beat Box, Mahala Rai Banda, Bart & Baker, DJ Click, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Dunkelbunt, Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello), Ivo Papasov. But also Seun Kuti, Roots Manuva, Dandy Warhols, Miss Dynamite, Trojan Sound System, Jerry Dammers (The Specials), The Correspondents and General Elektriks.

Occasionally, Sacha organises events too like the Balkan Brass Battle (Fanfare Ciocarlia vs Boban Markovic) after party at the Komedia, Brighton and the Gogol Bordello after party with Eugene Hutz djing.

Other gigs of note include: Djing for the BBC3 World Music Awards after party at the Barbican, the Cuban Music Awards and the Balkan Fever Festival. 

Sacha’s International bookings have taken him to Berlin, Prague, Dublin, Valencia, Segovia, Madrid, Rome, Milan, Genova, Ariano Irpino, Brussels, Split and Komiza (Croatia) and Salzburg.
