We kick off June with a deeply atmospheric Theory Therapy mix from mu tate, who has pieced together a hypnagogic medley of experimental sounds, composed of intimate field recordings, haunting looped-based compositions and hazy, arpeggiated guitar. 

Hailing from Riga and now living in London, Artur Strekalov is one of the many producers pushing the boundaries of what ambient music can be. In fact, describing him as an ambient producer does a disservice to his exploratory work, especially his debut LP on Experiences Ltd. We’re only mid-way through 2021, but Let Me Put Myself Together already feels like a standout from this year, in part because of its ability to so seamlessly move between genres and musical influences. Aside from producing music, Artur is also the host of Inexact on radio.syg.ma, a fantastic mix series dedicated to deep listening and post-genre music. It’s a pleasure to welcome the UK-based artist on to the series. Sit back, put on your headphones and soak up the ambience.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show is brought to you by @parisaden, the Texas-based producer reshaping the sound of her home state with an experimental approach that has seen her work with the likes of Bbymutha and Lil Pump. Paris released her first full-length project, titled "19 & Drifting",  in 2020 and is set to follow it up with another release this year.

For Carhartt WIP Radio Paris Aden conducted a show, that features unreleased music, tunes she made for artists like her Houston based pal The Real Drippy, as well as little interview snippets in which she talks about her life, aims, and music. The newest vinyl release from 29 Speedway, UltraBody, is a compilation record featuring the music of Jake Muir, Pent & Dylan Kerr, Nexcyia & mu tate, James K, Flora Yin-Wong, Ex Wiish & Dorothy Carlos, Kamran Sadeghi, Tati au Miel, James Hoff, Eric Frye, qwqwqwqwa & sop.io, Muein, & Maxwell Sterling. The record is emblematic of the artists who have performed at 29 Speedway shows in New York and Europe over the past two years, and is the third in a series released by the label.

The first single, ‘Sans Titre’ by Nexcyia & Mu Tate, is out now. 

The LP is available for pre-order on Rubadub, Boomkat, and Bandcamp.  

UltraBody investigates how the self, spirituality, and language are intertwined with the intervention of subjectivity by new technologies. With increasingly sophisticated tech, and the supposed ability to remake the world and ourselves, what differentiates our individual discretion from the will imposed upon us by software? Quoting Walter Chaw, “Decades of rampant, unregulated and ill-considered technological leaps have begun to evolve, to mutate, humans at a biological level”. This haphazard acceleration towards a techno-utopic transformation of humanity has faulted, and as William Gibson put it wisely, is leading us to live in a “half assed singularity”. In this reality, artistic processes are influenced by excessive access to computational tools and assistance, but not utterly controlled. 

On UltraBody, sound has no separate existence from space.
