Belgium’s music scene has few cornerstones. R&S set a first in the 80s, Soulwax came in the 90s and Eskimo emerged in the early 00s, its evolution since more colourful than all of them combined. Taking music into emotion, introducing new names and spotlighting the cream of the current crop, ‘The Orange Collection’ is bright, genial and buoyant.

‘The Orange Collection’ is the latest installment in a new compilation series on Eskimo based around colours. Following the lauded first three chapters in this enterprising series -Pink, Blue and Green- Eskimo once again selected 12 songs with exquisite care. An effortless journey encompassing a range of sounds through indie dance, nu disco and electronica, it’s reassuring to find that Eskimo still stands for timeless quality and originality.

Caving

‘Honey’ explores the concept of loving someone for their flaws and failures. Constructed on a bed of muted guitar playing, and fleshed with soft synthesiser pads, the song is lulling and hypnotic. As Barwick says, ‘…we wanted to recreate the feeling of a diary entry, to try our best to connect directly with people and move them from place of honesty’. His beat-making exists in both the analog and the digital world, using claps, cymbals and shakers alongside programming and glitches.
