VARIOUS ARTISTS – PLANET LOVE: EARLY TRANSMISSIONS 1991-95

Having previously celebrated the deep and colourful world of late ‘80s and early ‘80s Italian house via the popular Welcome To Paradise compilation series, Safe Trip has now turned its attention to the roots and formative years of trance music.

Planet Love: Early Transmissions 1991-95 showcases the roots and formative years of trance via 13 loved-up, psychedelic, colourful, melodious and surprisingly varied dancefloor experiments from Europe, Australia and the United States.

The compilation includes pioneering proto-trance and early trance tracks from the likes of Hawke (AKA influential San Francisco producer Gavin Hardkiss), Epilson 9, Spooky, Oliver Lieb, Holy Ghost Inc, Morgan Wild (an outfit whose members included early NYC techno titan Damon Wild), Mijk van Dijk, Glam and Paul van Dyk.

Packed with must-have cuts, slept-on gems and sought-after rarities, Planet Love: Early Transmissions 1991-95 maintains the loved-up, listenable vibe of Welcome to Paradise while broadening its musical horizons. It is not a definitive history of trance music’s early years, but rather a colourful, life-affirming celebration of the varied strands that came together to create one of dance music’s most popular and enduring styles.

Aujourd’hui pour ce 29ème podcast, on reçoit nos voisins stéphanois Juan Tariko et Bonivan qui nous ont mijoté un b2b interstellaire. Amis depuis 15 ans, c’est à Lyon qu’ils viennent faire leurs études et qu’ils y découvrent leurs premiers vrais clubs et de nombreux artistes. C’est aux alentours de 2016 qu’ils commencent à beaucoup échanger sur la musique et à s’intéresser au mix dans des asso étudiantes ou à la maison. Pendant le premier confinement, ils se lancent avec plusieurs potes dans l’aventure Grosso Modo, un collectif qui a pour vocation de partager de la musique, faire de la radio et organiser leurs propres évents.

Ayant en tête de créer une grosse teuf et de diffuser leur vibe, la team s’est lancée dans l’organisation de leur premier festival cet été. Un spot giga cool, une progra super pointue, une bande de srabs bien motivés et Dixmontel était né. Si vous avez loupé ça en 2021, on ne peut que vous conseiller d’aller vous y prendre une claque pour la prochaine édition !

Ces deux sélecteurs hors pairs ont toujours eu un spectre d’influence assez large et respectivement différent. C’est d’abord autour de la musique rave qu’ils se retrouvent avant d’être aspirés dans des vibes mentales et slow par la suite. Inspirés par des labels comme Die Orakel, Magic Wire, Mirror Zone, Kalahari Oyster Cult, Antinote, Worst Records et tout ce qui gravite autour du crew Positive Education (big-up Sainté), vous pourrez prochainement croiser les 2 chefs entre Paris, Valence, Grenoble et Lyon.

Pour ce nouveau set, cosmic is the word : des artistes récents, des nouveautés des trouvailles 90s bien mentales, du downtempo, du dub, from Saint-Etienne to Saturne with love ! Bon appétit 🌯

Despite productions appearing here and there since 2015, Yuzo Iwata has kept a relatively low output. Contributing tracks to compilations and releasing singles under aliases Fabio Lazaro and Almost East, Iwata is also affiliated with Junki Inoue’s recent SAISEI label, editing pioneering early Japanese techno from the likes of Suzukiski and COLOGNe for rerelease.After ‘Acid House’ appeared on the Butter Sessions Come Together 12” in 2020, the label now play host to Yuzo Iwata’s first ever full length. The 10 tracks span a wide variety of tempos and show a consistent approach to unusual sound design first evidenced in Iwata’s RA Mix of the Day for Clubberia (100% originals recorded circa 2017).

Kaizu unfolds with dense environmental ambient textures before ‘Neverland’ takes us into broken dancehall rhythms and acid-tinged dub. ‘Funclub’ is reminiscent of Japanese video game soundtracks and 80s fusion whilst further into Side A the balearic energy continues to captivate, closing with the beautiful ‘Heroes Show Up Late’. This short piece is built around a looping vocal sample and shuffling drum work that all come together perfectly. There’s even a trace of Brazilian MPB influence at play with the vocal/synth interplay. It’s Iwata’s knack for percussion that is most evident across the album however, with Side B opening cut ‘Gamelion’ taking an Indonesian inspired approach to modern techno. It runs in a similar vein to Komodo Kolektif’s work and might be the dancefloor highlight of the whole LP. ‘Sundance’ follows with more Japanese motifs, recalling Haruomi Hosono’s F.O.E project. Another strong rhythmic workout suited to the floor. The environmental ambient textures return with the closing piece ‘Time 2 L’, strings, bird calls and droning synthesiser winding down the proceedings. Letting us know it’s time 2 leave?
