In the MOOD - Episode 417

There's a track on HAAi's upcoming debut album, Baby, We're Ascending, called "Louder Always Better." That kind of sums up her approach right there. (See also: "Biggest Mood Ever.") Since her first record, 2017's "Be Good" her approach to dance music has been to make as dense, overwhelming and uplifting as possible. Much has been made of her background in psychedelic rock, which definitely informs records like the muggy, intense Motorik Voodoo Bush Doof Musik, but it's not the whole story. A better point of reference might be DJ Harvey lost in the Australian desert, but comparisons are beside the point. At this point, HAAi is completely unique.

The Australian producer has made quite a name for herself as a DJ in her adopted hometown of London, and while her album shoots off in all directions—from ecstatic rave-pop to sultry stunners—her RA Podcast captures the spark that makes her such a beloved force behind the decks. Weaving powerful techno from artists like Atrip and Piska Power with weirder, adventurous music courtesy of Cocktail Party Effect and Sha Sha Kimbo—plus a few tastes of HAAi's new album—it's an eclectic mix that's as windy and unpredictable as her records. Plus, it ends with classic track by The Cure. That's just good taste.

This week´s AMFM is another CLR Podcast special edition, this time from myself, as I am releasing the 100th release of my label CLR. It is called “Time’s Up EP” and contains two originals by myself and a fantastic moody emotional remix by the one and only Ralf Hildenbeutel, the man with whom I did both albums “Burn Slow” and “Another Day” for the legendary Mute label. So this release goes full circle for me. No better way than to celebrate this release with a CLR Podcast that I recorded at the Coachella festival, which happened in California in April. It was the second time after 2018 that I got to play in the Yuma tent of that fantastic festival. This tent is run by the crew of the Sound Nightclub in Hollywood and has an insane line up and production. I am definitely happy to be a part of that again. The mix contains quite a few unreleased bits from my label, of course all three tracks of the CLR 100 release, as well as great promos from others and I start it off with my latest club remix for my “Another Day“ album track “Cause & Effect” that will be soon out on Mute. It is a 90 minute set, so for those who only get to hear the 60 min “radio version”, please go over to Mixcloud Select, find my channel and listen to the whole set without my voice overs and downloadable on your phone. With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there’s no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard’ Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism.

Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards’ turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit’s Packard Plant. 

An intimidating force behind the decks, he’s known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only.

For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit’s Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks.

Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it’s me. My one music that I’m passionate about. Love.”

Two years after their previous Against Strong Thinking mini album, Spanish techno-meets-new wave duo SDH returns with a new, killer EP. There is a duality rooted deeply in the very soul of this project that is reflected in the line-up as well as in the music the band creates.

While Sergi Algiz is behind the machines propagating a wide spectrum of electronic beats ranging from techno and body music to synthpop and electro, Andrea P. Latorre offsets the night club vibe of the pounding drums with her emotional, romantic vocals.

This same dichotomy is perfectly represented here by their new 12-inch Maybe A Body, out April 29, 2022 on Avant!. The title-track is a powerful song about body recognition, about having a voice and using it, sustained by some throbbing EBM with traces of 90’s trance/progressive, ending up in a perfect balance of rousing groove and hypnagogic feelings.

The B side is the hunting ground for more dream-like scenarios as it digs deep in the nostalgia realm with its retro mood filled with italo and synth-pop bliss. To power up both these aspects of SDH’s identity, we have called two of the best electronic producers out there to remix one track each. Maybe A Body has been given to techno golden boy and Avant! alumni Phase Fatale who has managed to enhance even further the trance-like nature of the track, creating just the perfect dancefloor filler.

All Of That has been instead reworked by the skillful hands of the rising star of the Eighties sound Pablo Bozzi who literally exploded the italo groove, occasionally smoothing things out with some breakbeats just where they’re most needed.
