This clip was played at Gerard's funeral celebration in Madison, Wisconsin. For those who knew him well you can remember how his heart rang through his voice. Gerard was a man of joy, wonder, creativity, humor and greatness. He was also a lifelong student and teacher of the effects that alcoholism can have on a person. He lived as if every moment was his last, and died at the age of 51 due to complications from alcohol. May he be loved. May he be blessed. May he be healed.

When I was 15 years old, I auditioned for a full ride music scholarship at UW Madison. We had very little money, and I wanted to go to college. The first concerto I played for competitions that led up to my scholarship audition was Ralph Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto - Romanza. After 38 years, I found a way to get the recording off of the cassette. After playing Vaughan Williams' concerto for the better part of a year, I switched to Mozart's Horn Concerto #3 in E Flat K 447. I wish I had that recording, but holy cow....who goes to college on a tuba scholarship?! Me! <Photo> Tube Christmas in St. Paul, MN around 2010.
