An enduringly popular Sufi kalam "Lal Meri Pat/Dam mast Qalandar" that is an ode to the saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, whose shrine is located in Sehwan Sharif in Sind. This was presented as part of the World Music Residency at the Banff Arts Centre on March 26, 2015 at the Margaret Greenham Theatre. I would like to thank all the musicians who accompanied me including a special appearance by our faculty member Ziya Tabassian on Iranian dairah, Adam Maalouf on tabla, Greg Squared and Daniel Pencer on clarinet, and Sahara Jane, Roya Yazdanmehr and Brechtje Van Dijk in chorus and clapping.  Special thanks to Kiya Tabassian for giving me this opportunity and Pandit Yogesh Samsi ji and Pandit Dhruba Ghosh ji for their blessings and kind words. Above all, my gratitude to my Ustad Hameed Ali Khan Sahib from Gwalior Gharana in Sind, who taught me this song as a devotee of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar sharing his beliefs in the saint's powers and miracles.  It is humbling to sing this ode to Lal Shahbaz because he is a symbolic caretaker of many marginalized groups in Pakistani society.

Widely considered one of the greatest voices ever recorded, he possessed an extraordinary range of vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours.

Extending the 600-year old Qawwali tradition of his family, Khan is widely credited with introducing Qawwali music to international audiences. He is popularly known as "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali", meaning "The King of Qawwali".
