Coby Sey is a musician, producer and DJ from South East London who offers a shifting, disorienting vision of club music. His distinguished presence in London has elicited a bold impression of his compositions and performances, to much the attention of acclaimed artists and collaborators Tirzah, Mica Levi, Kwes, Babyfather and Klein.

Coby's music – as best evidenced on AD93 and CURL - is reflective of his vast spectrum of influences, yet he remains undeniably uniquely himself; experimenting with live instrumentation and electronic-based productions, melding sounds with introspective lyrics into a dubbed-out anaesthesia. Live, these dreamlike compositions are imbued with a heavy, uneasy dancefloor energy, often abetted by live vocals as well as saxophone interjections c/o regular cohorts Ben Vince and CJ Calderwood.

Coby’s open-door approach to sharing and making music stretches to his work with London collective CURL, founded with Mica Levi and Brother May, who release records and host events with a collaborative, improvisatory approach, as well as a regular slot on NTS which offers a portal into his appealingly murky musical world.

Sunday, October 13, 2024, corresponds to the day Ce Coatl (1 Serpent) in the Aztec calendar or tonalpohualli. This day falls within the trecena of Cipactli (Caiman or Crocodile), symbolizing beginnings, creation, and the awakening of life.

The serpent, Coatl, is a symbol of transformation, wisdom, and power, closely connected to Quetzalcoatl, the god of civilization and knowledge. 

Quetzalcoatl embodies the union of opposites: the serpent, symbolizing the earth, the material, and the terrestrial; and the quetzal feathers, representing the sky, the spirit, and the divine. This teaches us that humans are a manifestation of this duality—both material and spiritual beings—and that the path to wisdom involves finding balance between these two dimensions.

Quetzalcóatl, master of civilization, taught us the power of knowledge—not only to elevate ourselves as human beings but to build communities based on harmony, respect, and deep connection with the earth. Quetzalcóatl, the creator of civilization, also teaches us that true knowledge is the medicine against ignorance and hatred. 

With this sound healing journey, we celebrate all those who resisted, standing firm in their beliefs and values. I created this sound journey in remembrance of the voices that were silenced, the spirits that were muted, and the stories that were lost.
