The son of Jamaican parents, DJ K-Swyft (a.k.a. The Bronx Blend King) was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 7, 1975 as Kemuel Johnson and received his first set of turntables at age 8. Born into a family of music lovers and musicians, it was inevitable for K-Swyft to dive into the art that he once considered a hobby. He was influenced by his older brothers (Rich and Negus) who were also DJs…. in addition to early New York hip-hop DJs such as Brucie B, DJ Red Alert, Mr. Magic, and Chuck Chillout. Upon moving from Brooklyn to the Bronx, K-Swyft started to perfect his craft with the help of neighborhood DJs in the BX such as DJ Solo, Mike Porter, and DJ Paul Smooth while growing up. He also looked up to DJs such as The Bounce Master DJ Doo Wop, DJ Ron G, DJ Dirty Harry, Action Pac, New Jersey’s DJ Juice, and DJ Funk Master Flex (just to name a few). K-Swyft is a child of the 1980’s and had the privilege to witness the birth of hip-hop while growing up in the Bronx.

November 9, 1993 will forever go down as one of the greatest days in hip hop history.  Two of the genre’s most revered albums dropped on the same day:  Wu-Tang Clan’s debut ‘Enter The 36 Chambers’, &  A Tribe Called Quest’s third LP ‘Midnight Marauders’.  I remember riding my bike to the mall, with money I had earned from my after-school job.  I had anticipated this day for awhile, and saved up in advance to pick up both albums (at that age $40 felt like $500).  For the months that followed, both albums fought for playing time on my boombox.  One moment, I was transported to the boulevard of Linden, and the next to the rugged streets of Shaolin.  Those albums stayed in my rotation forever (literally).
To mark the 25th anniversary of both LP’s, I thought it might be a good idea to try and take the vocals from Wu-Tang’s album, and blend them over the instrumentals from Midnight Marauders.  I wasn’t sure it would work at first, but as is usually the case, inspiration hit at midnight when I was trying to sleep (the coincidence of the timing is not lost on me).  A couple of hours later, I managed to pair up every single Wu-Tang vocal with a suitable beat from MM.  The intent was not to improve on the originals in any way….that would be impossible, as I consider them both to be perfect bodies of work.  Rather, it was about orchestrating a fun concept, and putting a totally new spin on these well-worn classics.  The contrast of Wu’s gritty street raps over Tribe’s jazzy production works in an unexpected way.  Now, I present to you my personal tribute to these legendary groups:   A Clan Called Wu - “Enter The Marauders”.

The legendary live performances of Saleem & The Music Lovers have put them on stage with the likes of Common, The Roots, De La Soul, Talib Kweli, KRS-1, Little Brother, Rakim, and The Wu-Tang Clan to name a few. Their music has been featured on CNN, written about in newspapers and magazines, and rocking overseas for years, and you still don’t have them in your iPod? You may want to update your playlist…very soon.

So, who is Saleem & The Music Lovers? The band formed in 05’ with a simple goal to blend the live band tradition with elements of modern hip-hop. The band decided early on to forgo the use of live drums and instead use an ASRX-Pro drum machine as a nod to hip-hop productions from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Now, imagine a production manager’s surprise, and trepidation, when Saleem & The Music Lovers arrive on stage and say, “We don’t need our drums mic’ed up, but can you show me where to plug in?” Needless to say, it was a risky and groundbreaking step to take, but they felt that it was well worth it.

They started out using simple rhythmic patterns that focused on heavy basslines over head nodding drum sounds. However, in the process of discovering their “voice,” they began to infuse elements of jazz, soul, and rhythm & blues into their music. This immediately expanded the breadth and scope of their musical expressions prompting radio show host Ryan Green to say, “Saleem & The Music Lovers pick up where The Roots’ Things Fall Apart left off.”

Saleem provides the perfect counterpoint to the melodies crafted by Topix, Sinseer, Lady T, and Debbie H, The Music Lovers. Together, their powerful performances have won them fans from east to west and abroad, making them one of the most highly regarded groups on the underground scene.

Saleem & The Music Lovers have been compared to many, but they continue to blaze their own trail, brimming with the raw, organic vestiges of early hip-hop culture. The group has reawakened the trend of blending powerful performances with intelligent lyrics. In the tradition of artists such as, Stevie Wonder, Mos Def, and Curtis Mayfield, Saleem & The Music Lovers challenge listeners to move beyond restrictive labels and simply focus on the music. As Saleem says, “It’s soul food served on a platter to your children, and if they love music I know they’re going to listen.” So, better late than never.
