The Hot Mass podcast series is back and for the next 4 editions we'll be looking back on the past year in advance of our 6 year anniversary. Each set was record live at Hot Mass and for this round we'll be featuring two of our residents, along with two guests. 

@salemhilal is a Pittsburgh native currently residing in NYC. Since moving he has begun to make a name for himself, DJing around the city, releasing solo productions and collaboratively as @sleep300. For this set, Salem quickly got the dance floor moving with a selection of inviting house tracks, ahead of fellow New Yorkers Akua and Doxa.

Special Interest Group is the first compilation to be released on Cultivated Sound, featuring tracks from both experimental artists, ambient, and dance music artists locally in New York and internationally.

This compilation expands the dynamic range of electronic music by incorporating a variety of sounds from ambient, electronic to electro-acoustics to noise, house and techno.

“Special Interest Group” represents a post-utopian vision on forming a community of artists that narrates the experience of traveling to an imaginary reality, sharing a collective interest in expanding the listener's perception of sound by experimenting and advancing sound from machines and acoustic instruments. By inputting information, creating an environment to learn, collaborate, reflect and address ideas to each other. This compilation showcases Cultivated Sound’s aesthetic and pursues in sound, also is a tribute to the place that can be inhabited but is nevertheless a mirage.

The three tape album is mastered by Ryan Wurst, featuring artwork and photography by Tayla Roberge. A limited version of 100 copies will be released as a special art edition in collaboration with PASP, releasing both physically and digitally.

Born in Pittsburgh and based in Brooklyn, Salem has spent time honing a hard yet diverse sound, leaning towards house cuts, hardware jams, and stripped-down techno. He cut his teeth throwing house parties and hosting radio shows in Pittsburgh, and performs as half of the live hardware techno project Sleep 300, playing for parties such as Techno Support Group, Distant Signal, and Kindergarten. He's recently put out solo singles with both Cultivated Sound and Blank Stairs, and has been recording a series of live sessions with Sleep 300.
