C'est un peu avant le début de l'hiver qu'est apparu le concept Discomatin. Mag Spencer, DJ et digger confirmé s'alliait en effet à un de nos membres, Saint-James, pour proposer une formule d'after déviant quelque peu de ce qui existe déjà sur la capitale. Au menu, de la funk, de la disco, de la house mais aussi plein d'autres choses. Après trois premières éditions ayant vu défiler Alex de Katapult, Julien Lebrun, Guillaume du Mellotron ou encore Théo Top de La Mamie's et Jim Irie qui les rejoindront comme DJ's résidents sur leur prochain évènement, ils décident de créer une série d'edits gratuits dans la lignée de l'after.

It is rare that simplicity and recognizability happen in dance music, but ‘Take 8’ is just that. A song so heartfelt and recognizable it demanded its own slab of wax. This expertly mixed and crafted house cut romances listeners into a catchy live piano ditty that could go on for days.

The label decided the piano ​should​ go on and set up NYC classical Pianist and friend of Honey Soundsystem crew Kevin Devine on a blind date with the producers for the A2. Kevin whipped up a compositional response to the original and it was recorded live on a Grand in LA-4A’s studio. Finally, to make it a family affair, Taraval, known for his work of Four Tet’s TEXT, teams up with label co-founder Jackie House for a kraut-no take on the original, fusing vacillating resonant bleeps and robust drums with glimpses of the original’s ethereal sounds.

Five years have now passed since Boogie Café Records was established as an outlet for soul-flecked dance floor jams. The Bristol-based label has grown exponentially in that time, with a succession of highly regarded releases attracting a swathe of higher profile artists to the roster.

The latest is Russian heavyweight Alexander Lay-Far, a producer whose blends of deep house, disco, boogie, soul, jazz and broken beat have appeared on labels including Local Talk, Atjazz, City Fly, Lazy Days, Leng and the In-Beat-Ween Music imprint he established in 2015.

The Moscow-based producer’s first outing on Boogie Café is entitled “Re-Imagine Yourself”; it seems a fitting name, because across the four sample-heavy tracks Lay-Far brilliantly joins the dots between disparate sounds and styles whilst retaining his trademark warmth and soul.

For this EP, Lay Far's just explained his process behind the video:

 "It’s pure 90’s nostalgia right here and a tribute to the halcyon days! I made the video using “Music” (Music Creation) for Sony Playstation 1 - that’s the very program I first started my sound experiments with back in 1998 - 1999. 20 years after I feel like it’s high time to go back to the roots and pay homage to the era! "

It seems an eternity since City Fly’s last release with homegrown bad boy The Last Trip To Gandahar back in the summer of 2018. The EP received love from underground cats and mainstream players alike - even appearing on BBC Radio 1 and receiving rave reviews in both DJ Mag & Mixmag. 

Moving into 2020, they launch the first in their ‘Fly Family’ compilation albums, calling upon an array of underground all-stars from around the globe to make up this 12 track album of previously unreleased / original cuts. The album is drenched in deep, soul flecked bombs ranging from the jazzy hip-hop intro of Cologne's Ugly Drums who teams up with Detroit MC :brownstudy to the heads down, no nonsense 'Warehouse Shit' from Simbad. WAREHOUSE FIND!  Look what a friend brought me from a cellar in Nottingham.... 20 copies on bandcamp for a fiver each...

Ok so this was my first ever Red Rack’em release from 2004. Remixes of Yvette Michelle and Tweet which I self released on my own pirate soul label. I beatmixed the Yvette acapella with a Love Unlimited Orchestra instrumental and despite one being plus one and the other being minus one they were perfectly in key. Piccadilly Records described it as ‘the best rework of all time’ or words to that effect.

Crazy to think that 16 years ago, while being a semi employed part time college teacher/bar DJ/wildman, I managed to pay for 500 of these to be made and a repress. I think I ended up selling 750-1k which was pretty amazing. Shouts to Yam Who? Blackbeard and Red Astaire for the HUGE inspiration as I wouldn’t have made these first records if it wasn’t for their homegrown remixes which made me think ‘I can do it too’. Shouts to Gary from Funky Monkey (RIP) for sorting me with the well chosen acapellas and encouraging me to do the Smugglers Inn series!

Gonna stick these cheap on bandcamp if anyone wants a mint slice of history.
