'Mani' #1 w/ Prins Emanuel 2023-10-05 @ Lyl Radio

"For a long time I’ve wanted to do this episode; a show devoted to The Tower Recordings collective, responsible for some of my favourite albums from the 90s New Weird America scene. The group, primarily based in New York at the time, consisted of a rotating cast of members; Matt Valentine, PG Six, Helen Rush, Samara Lubelski, Tim Barnes, and Dean Roberts appear on most of their recordings. Self-proclaimed “children of microtones” the heady recordings make reference to Philip K Dick, Sun Ra, The Incredible String Band, Comus, Moondog, as well as an impressive list of subterranean private press folk and psych records. These are Harry Smith’s grandchildren. 

At times the recordings are home-recorded and charmingly shambolic, brethren of the Siltbreeze stable — at other times they have a loose-limbed and spectral sensibility, wide-screen psychedelia recorded to magnetic tape, urbane cousins of the Elephant Six Recordings constellation. The collective often practiced group levitation recording long improvised tapestries of bleary-eyed sound experiments, but on this mix, I focussed on the group’s gift for song & mood, pulling pieces from their extensive discography of records, singles, CDs and CDrs, as well as from post-Tower solo recordings from core members. The collective has always sounded autumnal to me, and this mix is resonating nicely with the cooler weather out here. Enjoy the sounds of the Tower Recordings" -- Brandon Hocura

Luisali originally from dresden lived in Berlin for a while where she submerged in the music scene. Then she became part of the Spettro collective in Brescia, Italy and now lives between Brescia and Vienna. Allways organizing concerts everywhere she goes.

For Episode No. 32, we are thrilled to present none other than DJ Peacock and Ahmed.sky. 

DJ Peacock, aka Pieter Kock, is a driving force behind Berlin’s legendary Otannenbaum, a place for true music lovers to hang out, come together and celebrate. Also, being a gifted musician, he has produced several masterpieces that do not shy away from bending styles and conventions. His latest albums on the R.i.O. and Moonwalk labels prove the case in point.

Joining him for our show is Ahmed.sky. Part of the Paris-based collective Soucoupe, which hosts the fantastic show Strange How You Move on DIA! Radio. A true seeker of obscure sounds full of quirkiness, heartwarming folklore and tape hiss. His recording certainly reflects what we call a holistic trip!

Embarking on the new calendar season of De Kat Memwa with a guest I've been eagerly anticipating. There's always been an imaginary roster of creators in my mind that I'd be thrilled to host in the series. Vienna-based artist Andrea Ida has long been on this list, but somehow, due to my own negligence, I couldn't get in touch with her. Finally, I managed to correct this glaring mistake.

I recall stumbling upon Andrea's mixes somewhere around 2019, and I was absolutely mesmerized. Nearly every corner of the sonic internet space was filled with tropical sounds, which we were also cultivating at that time. However, Andrea stood out among music enthusiasts with her love for krautrock, punk, NDW, and other dark arts and matters.

I deeply admire individuals with diverse musical interests who can showcase a wide array of genres in their mixes, while evoking a specific emotion or association. Andrea is precisely one of those musical weavers. Her mixes are comprised of different nodes and intertwinings that form a unified masterpiece.

For me, her works are always about active listening, surprise, inspiration, and most importantly, immersion in sound, transitioning from one state to another, and also about charisma and daily protest against routines. And this unique release, recorded by Andrea specifically for De Kat Memwa, is no exception.

As I was crafting this text, I wanted to encapsulate the impression of listening to the mix in the form of a metaphor. Perhaps it was obvious to write something about an esoteric shamanic ritual.... But not today... 

For me, this mix is akin to riding on Falcor the Luck Dragon from the movie The NeverEnding Story, only you're not a teenager anymore, but an adult!
