When corona hit the world United We Stream and ARTE TV was setting up a live stream at Sameheads Berlin. I played a very apocalyptic set as the mood was back in the days.

Our latest Séance Centre Radio episode is a very special mix from Toronto wunderkind Raf Reza. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s seemingly everywhere at once, playing live in Montreal, DJing around the city and across the pond, running the record shop at Standard Time, and most recently releasing wild dance floor dub mutations on 12th Isle, as well as an upcoming LP, Bangla Dance Fusion on Telephone Explosion. For this episode Raf has compiled a mix of songs from Bangladeshi cassettes from the 80s and 90s.
 
Here’s what Raf wrote about the mix: “Bangladesh only a decade after its 1971 independence war with Pakistan created a number of bands who combined the traditional songwriting techniques with influences from western acts. There is an obvious touch of Reggae, New-Wave, Funk and Psychedelic Rock throughout most of these recordings. Most of these bands released directly to cassette since there wasn’t much of a budget to produce vinyl LP’s. However this low barrier of entry resulted in many bands picking up their instruments to have a go at stardom and make their voice heard. This mix here is a selection of the vast variety of 80s and 90s Bangladeshi bands who created a unique sound of melancholy yet infectiously funky tunes. These recordings reflect the heart and minds of the Bangladeshi people still torn by war but also holding on to the hope of a brighter future.”

Co-running R.i.O. label and being part of the monthly Past Forward Show on Cashmere Radio, @Menqui always strives to offer quality music. He DJs in Neukölln spots like @Sameheads, OTB, Ziegra11..., and at Fusion, @cosmicgathering, Nation of Gondwana, Zmar... Festivals. 

His wonderful mix for our Music for Indoors series www.instagram.com/ecoutesauvert, locks its slow rhythm & mood right from the start, flowing through deep ambient along meditative grooves. 

@Menqui was born in Pforzheim, a small city on the border of the beautiful black forest. After visiting Berlin a few times, he moved there in 2013. In his teenage years, his older Brother inspired him with his CD collection which was focused on US Hip-Hop and electronic projects like Prodigy, Kruder & Dorfmeister, and so on. He also had the chance to learn the violin, but the instrument never "clicked" with him, thus stopping around 13 years old. 

Later he turned his interests to Skateboarding and roots reggae, dub and jungle musically. As they didn't have any good events in their hometown, together with his good friend Benedikt Frey, they organized events called "Larifari", which were mainly focused on dub techno and deep house. 

Since then, @Menqui has spent much time in record shops and browsing the web discovering all kinds of music, from obscure German tracks from the 70s and 80s to psychedelic funk from all around the globe to more wavy stuff, Ambient, Krautrock, and much more...

In 2019, he founded @riolabel with @freybenedikt and @daloworks, to release experimental dance music with a psychedelic touch, which is also suited for home listening.

This recording is my love letter to African music, with focus on sounds from north and west Africa, spanning from 1950s to present and covering genres like gnawa, chaabi, rai, soukous or palm wine music.

I wanted to present the tracks I’m most obsessed with, drawn from the endlessly diverse well of African musical genius.
