With a Piazzolla-esque atmosphere, the A section features trombone and alto saxophone before the piece grows into an uplifting and passionate B section. Solo section features the piano (fully written in the score for inspiration for the soloist).

2 Alto Saxes, 2 Tenor Saxes, Baritone Sax, 4 Bb Trumpets, 3 Tenor Trombones, Bass Trombone, Rhythm Section (Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums). The solo passage features piano, with a sample solo notated and chord symbols above for the pianist to improvise from.

Look to This Day weaves between the two worlds of jazz and classical music. It features a richly coloured harmonic palette typical of jazz artists like Kurt Elling, whilst paying homage to the traditions of French mélodie (art songs) such as those by Reynaldo Hahn.

The piece's lyrics are loosely based on an English translation of the poem 'Look to This Day' by Kālidāsa (India, c. 5th Century CE):

Look to this day, for it is life, it's life! The very life of life.
In its brief course lies the truth of one's existence.
The bliss of growth. the glory of action.
The splendour of achievement are but experiences of time....

Featuring the exquisite voices of Canberra’s Luminescence Chamber Singers conducted by Roland Peelman AM, the music is an affectionate reflection on mortality in a unity of text, music, voice and place that explores the timeless human condition of loss, regret, hope and reassurance.

“Sally’s piece is an act of kindness,” says Sarah Rice, who also commissioned the music. “The first thing one notices is its lyrical line – its simplicity, intricacy, delicacy and sense of purpose. There is an intimacy in the piece that is the size and weight of a human life.”
The ambience and acoustic of All Saints Church provides the perfect setting for the recording of If I Could (Have Given You A Note) and its accompanying music video, directed by Marisa Martin, which celebrates its unique heritage, beauty of light and atmosphere.

The piece was written as part of a multi-composer commissioning project, spearheaded by writer and visual artist Sarah Rice, as part of her Text/ure project, which spanned several years and multiple artforms which overlapped and responded to one-another.

Composed for the Australian Youth Orchestra 2014 National Music Camp.

The piece features a 4-note melodic motif – which weaves its way through a variety of instrumental colour combinations, textures and moods. The effervescent moments in this work explore the interaction of several small ensembles within the orchestra. The climax is a wild fanfare – described as ‘Nordic Triumph!’ in the score – inspired by the grand and wild forests of Scandinavia.

Choral music has a unique power to touch something very deep inside us – whether it’s classical music, church music or folk music.  Millions of people around the globe sing in amateur and community choirs, even continuing to sing together during the pandemic by linking up online. This extraordinary sense of community – of belonging, of being greater than the sum of your parts – that you experience when you join in song with other people has proven benefits to our physical and mental wellbeing. 

This philosophy goes to the heart of choral ensemble The Resonants, directed by Helen Swan, who commissioned "Resonance" in 2015 to celebrate their 25th anniversary and contribute a locally-produced choral piece for the wider repertoire for talented choirs around the globe.

This retrospective a-capella vocal work features lyrics from the poem A Green Cornfield by Christina Rosetti (1830-1894). The piece features a bright and warm opening before exploring the darker palette of rich harmony akin to Poulenc.

Jazz and Christmas have become a tradition the world over - but here's something fresh to add to your Vince Guaraldi Xmas Playlist...

This toe-tapping number, "God Rest Ye Groovy Gentlemen", will put you into the Christmas mood while you decorate your tree and prep your house for the festive season.

Sally Greenaway's swinging big band arrangement of this classic carol pays homage to the golden age of the big band whilst keeping a foot firmly in the modern big band sound. It's a toe-tapping jaunt on one of the oldest and most loved Christmas carols.

Sally Greenaway's love affair with big bands is no secret - she has conducted many big bands and written a decent range of big band charts (a few of them are featured on her album "Dig This: Exploring the Big Band").

Big bands have been instrumental for composers and arrangers throughout almost every era in jazz history. From Duke Ellington and Count Basie, to Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich, to Michel Camilo and Maria Schneider and many more who have forged their voices in this ultimate jazz medium. Sally Greenaway is a local Canberra and Australian composer who contributes to the big band canon with music that is fun to play and audiences love.

Her foray into writing for big band began with her piece 'Falling of Seasons', written for the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. She took part in their highly acclaimed National Big Band Composition Competition in 2008, which is broadcast on ABC Classic FM's Jazztrack with Mal Stanley. Her piece won the award that year - and at that moment she became addicted to the incredible rush and excitement that comes from the inevitable combination of arranged and improvised elements in jazz orchestration.

She has since been working with big bands all around the country who have performed her music to great public toe-tapping satisfaction.

'Summer Beckons' was commissioned by Thea Zimple as part of a song cycle consisting of works by Australian composers for the concert 'My Love is a House'.  Each composition in the song cycle is associated with a stanza in Martina Hoffman's poem 'My Love is a House'. 

The piece features melodic lines inspired by birds and leafy Summer growth:

'...in Summer the walls are covered with blossoms and buds and tendrils reaching...'

The original scoring of this work was for flute and piano, but has been re-worked to feature Barbara's sublime violin playing.

The piece was inspired by Canberra artist Paul Summerfield's work 'Chaos at the Sky Regatta', which was commissioned for the Children's ward at the Canberra Hospital.

'Fantasia' is a modern classical composition inspired by Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy and even the film score from Pirates of the Caribbean.

This version has been scored for 3 Bb clarinets, bass clarinet and piano.

02 Fantasia [Mvt 2-3]

This is a solo piano piece, written in the style of, and inspired by Chopin's Études.

This Étude was composed especially for the Chopin Inspired Composition Competition 2012. The piece explores the technical requirements of performing a consistent octave quaver pattern beneath a beautiful, introspective melody. The mood and colour of this piece is very similar to Chopin's Nocturnes. Influences: Chopin Prelude Op. 28 no. 2 in A minor; Nocturne Op. posth no. 20 in c# minor.

'In Memoriam'
This piece was written in memory of my beloved piano teacher, Peggy Crosskey. She had mentored me and inspired me for 10 years. Upon finishing the piece, I immediately rang her number, only to find out that she had just passed moments earlier - so she never heard it. It was played at her funeral, which was attended by hundreds of musicians from far and wide.

Awards: This piece won the APRA JazzGroove Mothership Orchestra National Big Band Composition Competition in 2008

This advanced level chart is a modern through-composed jazz work in two main sections. The first section is atmospheric and features lush orchestration, with the saxophone section doubling on flutes and clarinets. The second section is fast-paced with an ostinato bassline and has a quasi middle-eastern flavour.

Falling of Seasons [feat. Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra]

"Nature Boy" arranged for big band by Sally Greenaway.
This is an advanced level big band chart inspired by the version by Kurt Elling and Laurence Hobgood. It is thickly scored and features an open solo section as well as a drum solo over a vamped chord progression. It faithfully refers to many exciting melodic and harmonic moments from various performances by Kurt Elling and his ensemble.

Nature Boy [Big Band]

"Waltzing Matilda" arrangement by Sally Greenaway.

Awards: This arrangement won the Canberra International Music Festival Young Composer Award in 2009 and was premiered by world renowned vocal sextet Rajaton.

The piece has also featured at Eisteddfods around Australia. The piece has been completely re-worked from the original popular folk tune to include a richer palette for the harmony and melody. It features several key changes and a beautiful quasi-improvisatory bridging passage at the climax.
A version written for SATB with piano accompaniment is also available.

This is an adaptation for piano of an original film score I wrote for a scene from the Lord of The Rings as part of course work while studying at the Royal College of Music, London. I was feeling incredibly home sick and the footage of the scene I was scoring the music to had beautiful scenic mountains and rivers and it made me think of Australia's impressive Blue Mountains, its fog filled valleys rising and dissipating as the morning sun hits them.
