This one’s been a long time coming. Giulia Tess has been Clasico family tree since before the label started, even playing back-to-back with label boss ELEANOR at Local Action’s 10th birthday takeover of Corsica Studios. Sometimes the seeds of a record are email attachments - with this one it’s years’ worth of dinners, afters and smoking area heart-to-hearts.

Giulia’s music feels poised between a few different styles and worlds, but mostly it’s that balance between the rough broken rhythms of the UK’s soundsystem legacy and the elegant melodies of European house and techno. Call it Serie A with a loan spell at Peak Barclays. Or if you want to get really reductive, gunfingers with one hand, 🤌 with the other.

And so it goes on this EP: four Giulia Tess club cuts full of earworms, emotional heft and some serious range. There’s transcendent piano house (‘you know’), bug-eyed synth workouts (‘crazy’), acid breakbeats (‘brk dwn’) and otherworldly epics (‘tempo00’), but regardless of direction, everything is tied together with Giulia’s customary flair and a pinch of melancholy.

With Solar Return EP, Bristol-based artist, Jon Chmielewski, who goes by the alias Zobol, continues to refine his space age-y, sci-fi leaning approach to dance music. Across three sprawling tracks, Zobol takes listeners on a voyage through distant, expansive, awe-inspiring soundscapes. 
	Opening track, “Rings of Saturn (Fading),” is a sonic portal into another dimension, one seemingly unbothered by the ordinary rules and logic of space and time. The track illustrates what it might feel like for one’s body, or a substance of some kind, to undergo a form of transmutation. Beginning with a skeletal kick-drum pattern, it quickly evolves with glistening synth arpeggios, atmospheric, reverberating keys, undulating bass, and squelchy acid hits. It’s almost as if the track takes on a life of its own as it continues mutating into a surprisingly graceful, multi-tiered organism with every new break. 
	Dropping on July 31st via Birmingham-based Erbium Records, this track is refreshingly organic and tuneful, while still retaining a mechanized, heady approach. While Zobol’s work here might not be exactly humanist, it certainly has a mercurial, exploratory quality to it that feels very much the work of someone who is tirelessly searching for new, inventive ways of synthesizing machine-made sounds for the dancefloor.

Day by day, the memories of club nights gone by seem to be fading from our collective consciousness. The idea of being in a densely packed room with a pounding sound system feels like something we’ve been long removed from, both physically and culturally. Every once in a while though, something comes along that instantly transports you back to those simpler times. With an instantly recognisable sample and a relentless four-to-the-floor break, Liquid Crystals by Placid One on Gestalt Records does exactly that – combining a sense of dancefloor nostalgia with sublime production and an entrancing acid line that will stay with you well after the needle leaves the record.

Placid One is no stranger to atmospheric breaks. Previous releases have seen him lend his hand to everything from gorgeous downtempo jams to jungle-inspired rave; genres that on paper seem worlds apart but that he is able to draw parallels between through his signature broken rhythms and sombre lead melodies. This release sits firmly between those two styles at a cool 134bpm – designed with the club in mind, whilst still holding enough emotional weight to warrant repeated listens in a home setting.

The track clocks in at just over 6 minutes and boasts a couple of tasteful breakdowns during this time. The uplifting synth line weaves in and out of the mix but never truly overstays its welcome, allowing the pounding percussion and morphing 303 line to dictate the energy and momentum of the track. What really stands out here is the vocal; in direct contrast to the moody atmosphere of the instrumental, there is a repeated interpolation of the infamous Loleatta Holloway “I’m gon’ diss you” sample - made famous by the likes of Bicep and Armando amongst others in previous years. The juxtaposition of this iconic old-school vocal against Placid One’s ultra-modern sound design and signature drum programming gives a result that oozes with dancefloor nostalgia.

This track makes up one-fifth of the forthcoming HPU013 EP, with each track demonstrating Placid One’s penchant for creating club-driven rhythms whilst showcasing his diversity as a producer. In the context of the release, the traditional 4/4 structure of Liquid Crystals will likely make this the most obvious weapon of choice for many DJs. The track sits alongside a breaky UKG-inspired stomper (HPU013), an electro-infused acid workout (Reinelda) and the fantastically-titled CocoFishTrap – an enthralling IDM track demonstrating the artist’s ability to combine complex drum programming with mesmerising ambient soundscapes. The more adventurous DJs out there may look to reach for Seaweeds, with its off-kilter breakbeat patterns drawing similarities to the likes of leftfield techno favourites Overmono. For the most part though, the gripping energy of Liquid Crystals’ four-to-the-floor groove, combined with its understated yet enchanting aura and tried-and-tested vocal makes this track stand out as the most viable peak-time candidate for when the sweaty basement clubs once again open their doors.

After appearances on Pure Space Canberra's Point Guard coming through with a strong solo debut. Three nuance-rich rolling originals will surely please the discerning ear. Sydney native PMA's remix on the flip transforms the eponymous track "Motions" into a mesmerising banger.
