Something Like This (feat. Pleasure)

In an age of innumerable bedroom producers and DIY beatmakers, encountering one with a distinctive flavour to their music is becoming near impossible. This is refreshingly not the case, however, for Deft (aka Yip Wong). Having already manned several flagship labels of dance music such as WotNot, Brownswood, Hypercolour and Project Mooncircle (who billed Deft for their 2013 BR session), Deft draws musical, technical and stylistic influence from anything and everything in his musical creations. Initially a drummer, he now produces music which audibly tips its hat to hip hop, footwork, house, jungle and beyond. Check his 2014 "Emeralds" track for what we believe to be the ultimate embodiment of all of Deft's different musical pedigrees.

His latest venture on 20/20 LDN Recordings, the Blackest EP, takes a step back from the forward-propelling, Machinedrum-esque footwork drum rhythms that are prevalent in plenty of Deft's previous work. Here, the focus is on the deeper and darker. "After hearing what [label founders] Ivy Lab had in mind for 20/20, it instantly brought me back to the early beats scene," says Deft. "The beats scene was something that got me excited back when it emerged properly. I felt that excitement again with 20/20." Each of Blackest's five tracks stand out for varying reasons, but it's the penultimate one – a Tehbis and Touchy Subject collaboration – that has resonated with us beyond comparison. A track that seems to continually metamorphose within its 3.5 minute timeframe, so many musical territories are broached that it's pretty impossible to summarise. Initially luring you in through an ethereal world of crystallised synth fragments, the forecast slowly grows murkier, as the entire tracks gets sucked into dizzying whirlwind of dubby drums and electric static. A notable comeback from a truly talented beatsmith.

Blackest EP will be available both digitally and on vinyl on 8th April via 20/20 LDN Recordings and all good record stores.

Expect early 90s influenced tracks taking inspiration from the golden years of such labels as Metalheadz, Reinforced, Moving Shadow and Good Looking. As for the logo, yes it’s awesome and was designed in that classic graffiti style pushed by like Suburban Base, Lucky Spin and DeeJay. The logo itself was designed by the super talented Art Jazz from Genaside II.

DOPE001 features 3 fresh Soul Intent tracks. “Love Me” takes heavy influence of the ultra rare and collectable Tom & Jerry series (off shoot project for some of the Reinforced crew). “Rushin’ 91” collects a number of early 90s classic rave samples and lays them on top of a truly fresh jungle foundation. Rave meets Jungle?? Lastly “Deeper" takes us back to those ambient breakbeat days first championed by the likes of LTJ Bukem and Fabio."

Here is the Final mix of our 1st Promo series ahead of Audio Venom presents Randall & Mc A.D on 4th march.

In this mix we have DJ Norm and host Rider. Holding down Audio Venoms Fortnightly Show on the multi award winning dnb radio station Rough Tempo Norm has a lot to offer on the mixing front. Being part of the Audio Venom team for around a year now he has helped us grow and performed/supported on various different nights.

Only Joining the team a few weeks ago Rider has proved he has got what it takes on the lyrical front, for starters he has hosted all 4 of our promo mixes in the first of our promo series. He has also performed on a few of our nights and we look to pursue his residency with us.

Los Angeles based Jordan Hill a.k.a no puls has been slowly amassing an impressive catalogue of tribal inspired, future-facing compositions heavily rooted in the ‘beat-scene’ provenance his home town & its famed ambassadors have immortalised. Alongside his two presciently named pitbulls Onyx & Quasimoto, Jordan - originally of Orange County - is a resident of the Highland Park area of L.A; a vibrant nerve-centre of instrumental hip-hop talent including members of Low-end Theory organisation Team Supreme and the Courteous family collective - the latter of which no puls has been a long-standing member of.

In a naturally Californian fashion, his music is the coming together of psychedelic cosmic leanings, stoned grooves & high technology. Much like other members of the Courteous Family, no puls harnesses a distinctively low-fi crunchiness to his music worthy of a comparison to the Toe Rag Studios aesthetic. It’s analog futurism cut from the same cloth as Danger Mouse & Madlib, tailored to fit the post-dubstep landscape.

In this inaugural outing beyond the Bandcamp / Free-to-DL paradigm, an incredible command of both patience & maturity is displayed. In an era of west-coast beat making often characterised by restless technical one-up-manship and bold lurches from one concept to the next, no puls is able to cut through the orthodoxy and channel his efforts into ear worm-orientated structures that develop with restraint yet still glow with technical flair.

“Tongues” E.P drops on 9th March Featuring 4 original compositions, and a guest appearance from Slugabed on the 5th track with his remix of “Fiji Quija”.
