To follow on from their critically praised debut EP Lonely Escapades, SALUTE MARY, a three-piece from Edinburgh, Scotland are set to release their latest offering on May 23rd 2011, a double A-side single: ‘Pacifying Hungry Ghosts / Rubella Rubata’. As with their last release, it was recorded at Green Door Studio, Glasgow with engineer Sam Smith (1990’s, Sons and Daughters, Chemikal Underground) with whom, the band have struck up a creative rapport.
SALUTE MARY have evolved both physically and musically since their last release, they have lost a guitarist and gained a new focus to their sound. As a trio, their power and emotional strength comes through in a new and somehow denser way.
‘Pacifying Hungry Ghosts/Rubella Rubata’ continues the same searing guitar, oblique bass lines and propulsive drums as debut 'Lonely Escapades', with a layer of atmospherics invoking the band's influences of Sonic Youth and Mogwai. The contrast between the two tracks is striking and yet the unifying sound is of a band who are on top of their game.
Pacifying Hungry Ghosts is colossal in scale drawing out a slow, soulful guitar riff into a huge chorus and maintaining a dynamic tension all the way to the thrilling conclusion. Psychedelic yet direct, raging but tuneful, ‘Pacifying hungry ghosts’ bulldozes preconceptions at volume. Echoing the title of the song, the track itself seems hungry, clawing forward towards the choruses which develop into the incrementally leaping instrumental noise-rock coda.
Rubella Rubata is a change of pace, featuring mournful intertwining guitar lines backed by vintage organ and soaring harmony vocals. Its subtle melodies stay with you, becoming more rich and diverse with each listen. All of this is backed by an assured rhythm section of pounding drums and a bass-line which holds the song together with great poise.
This single is an example of how SALUTE MARY have developed and consolidated their sound and have moved on creatively whilst not forgetting their past. As with debut EP ‘Lonely Escapades’ new single ‘Pacifying Hungry Ghosts/Rubella Rubata’ delivers that focused magic in spades: a seamless yet dynamic single that demands to be played loud and often, revealing more with each enraptured spin. Its clear SALUTE MARY have a keen understanding of what fires a nuanced modern rock band.

SALUTE MARY, a four-piece from Edinburgh, Scotland are all set to unleash their debut EP Lonely Escapades on September 6th 2010. Having spent 2009 extensively gigging and writing the band went to the studio under the guidance of engineer Sam Smith (Chemikal Underground, Green Door Studio) to record their debut EP Lonely Escapades.
Salute Mary’s appreciation for the pioneering musicians of the 80s and 90s are what laid the foundation for the band’s sound. With an evolving approach and focused, streamlined sound, Lonely Escapades explores various styles from the darker, sombre realm of ‘Vivid Pale’ to the driving guitar work and unbridled emotion on display in ‘Alibi’.Lonely Escapades pounds with a weighty, dark alt-rock fervour that recalls Smashing Pumpkins’ heyday; at other times, the record buzzes with a frantic distortion and howling anger reminiscent of Nirvana.
Post-rock elements add depth to a broad and diverse direction for the band perhaps most evident on title track ‘Lonely Escapades’ which blendsa burning bass groove, aching vocals and ambient guitar noise that intermittently, explodes from the speakers adopting a dynamic range and sense of urban noir indicative of post rock bands like Mogwai. With intertwining guitar work and streamlined dynamics courtesy of a haunting cello line; ‘Hanging from Trees’ is reminiscent of Sonic Youth's more reflective output which climaxes with an atmospheric yet furious bath of noise.
For the band, Lonely Escapades feels like the first step in a new exciting direction and with an abundance of material to work on they are looking forward to a bright future.

Edinburgh based three-piece SALUTE MARY’s appreciation for the pioneering musicians of the 80s and 90s are what laid the foundation for the band’s sound. With an evolving approach and focused, streamlined sound, Salute Mary pounds with a weighty, dark alt-rock fervour with post-rock elements adding depth to a broad and diverse direction for the band.

Calum, Chris and Steve met in Edinburgh and after several months of jam sessions, Salute Mary hit upon their sound. Intense live shows and debut EP release ‘Lonely Escapades’ (2010) led to a passionate regional fan base and critical acclaim. In 2011, Salute Mary began working on a double A side single ‘Pacifying Hungry Ghosts/Rubella Rubata’ with engineer Sam Smith (1990’s, Sons and Daughters, Chemikal Underground) the new single will be released in May 2011.
