I’ve been working on stereo mixes of the four songs that I recorded on my old analog four track, using my computer. I’m adding a little bit of reverb, eq, and compression here and there. To do this I have to play each track individually from the four track, through my audio interface, and into the computer. 

A (not so) fun discovery was made: The four track doesn’t play at exactly the same speed every time. It’s a very small difference, but by the end of each song you can hear that things don’t line up quite right. I played and sang at the same time on these songs, so there is a lot of bleed between the guitar and vocal tracks. Even being almost imperceptibly off is a big problem when the guitar from the guitar track doesn’t line up with the same guitar on the vocal track. 

I man with less time on his hands would have given up. But I cut and pasted and messed around until everything lined up just right. And this is the result. 

As for the song, it has always been a better live song than a studio song. I’ve tried recording it a few times in a few different ways and I have never been super happy with the results. But this… I am quite pleased with this. So tape noise and synching issues and everything else aside, I feel like this is the “definitive” version of the song. 

You know, until I record it again…
