It's quite rare to view stars in a big city like Seattle.  Most of the time, I have to leave the city and go camping somewhere just to see the bright stars in the sky.  I love taking a long drive out into the middle of Washington; long drives out into the boonies to camp....I say it wouldn't be a Pacific Northwest summer without a weekend camping, staring at the stars. I find I get filled with inspiration when I stare up into space..... 

It seems I'm not alone in that either. Meet Dario Klein. Him and I got acquainted through the internet (shocker) and through releasing downtempo music on certain labels. I became quite a fan of his sound,  and soon we were sharing tunes back and forth. One day he asked me if I would be interested in remixing a song off his new EP with the Vienna vermin at Heimlich Musik ;) I quite enjoyed working on that remix, and soon, I found myself asking him if he'd share some of his sounds with a guest mix..... and now, it's time we all get LOST on a Space Ride!

Here's Dario:  "i just go with the flow, no matter if I'm djing or producing. I wanted to create a good soundtrack for a trip or road trip or anything, because the tracks are rolling so hard, so no matter if listeners sit at home and do a mind trip, or in a vehicle going somewhere, i think they can use it to get lost on the ride.  I'm also doing a lot of productions these days, after covid stopped me from being a touring musician. Last year I went from Berlin to Istanbul and then Marrakesh where I got stuck in curfew, but had the time of my life recording with my friends.  I think it's really important to capture your feelings in some way. It's good I find the time to feel free and just play what I feel. That's how I get lost on a space ride!"

L O S T on a Space Ride with Dario Klein

Last week I was given the opportunity to DJ my very first Yoga class. The nice folks of Commune Yoga wanted to celebrate their return to in person classes with a giant welcome back class featuring over 120+ yogis, live music, and taught by world renowned teacher Patrick Beach. 

This presented a unique challenge of reading a crowd, only instead of dancing,  they were flowing through movements and poses.  There was some ups and downs, mic interferences, beatmatching struggles,  and lots of volume balancing issues... but like yoga class, I stuck with it and kept breathing.   

May this mix provide you a nice soundtrack for your practice. Namaste.

Ilan Bluestone Ultimate Mix

I was given the opportunity to play alongside Cri and Ben Bohmer at my favorite venue in Seattle, the Showbox Market. It's been a bucket list venue to play ever since I decided to pursue this lofty music dream.  I was extremely nervous.  The crowd was the biggest I've ever played for, and I wasn't sure if they'd vibe to downtempo, but by the end of the set they called out for an encore song which has never happened to me before. You can imagine I was all smiles after this one  :) Enjoy.

Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorite musicians. I love his chord progressions, and his creativity always inspires me. When I first heard My Rajneesh, I was blown away. I felt like I was taken on a crazy ride for 11 minutes. Some of Sufjan's songs are a bit long and wacky at times, but there were some parts of this original song that I kept rewinding to hear again. I decided to cut some of those parts I love out, mash them together with some downtempo flavor, and slowed it down for a nice melodic journey. Hefja Blót - Danheim (SAMAHA Bootleg)

Around the fall, witches are associated with spooky Halloween. However I found a special witch who had a different story to tell, one that doesn't involve flying on brooms, spooky cauldrons and screeching cackles in the night. 

I invited her to join my LOST series to tell a specific story close to her heart. This mix is meant to represent the life of her great-grandfather, who had the misfortune to be involved as a soldier in The First World War, spending the full duration of the war in the trenches of the far West of Flanders, separated from his family who lived in occupied Belgium on the other side of the front line. I have no idea what kind of horrors he went through, but fighting was fierce in Flanders Fields and I know that he got seriously wounded twice. Luckily he survived the war and became a strong anti-war advocate later in life. 

This podcast is not about the war itself, but about the slow and painstaking return to a peaceful life. The first half of this mix is a bit of an emotional roller coaster, with the dark shadows of the war still lurking everywhere. The second half is completely different, very peaceful and full of bliss…

L O S T In Flanders Fields with Hekske

"Oh you are from Seattle? How's the rain over there? I hear it rains all the time!"

These comments are all too common for us Seattle folk, and during the winter times, they are fairly accurate.  I'm not a huge fan of the rain personally, but when I wake up on a cold rainy day, I tend to find inspiration in those dark moody clouds. and I'm not the only one...

Meet my good friend Marco Valencia. Him and I have had the pleasure of sharing club decks with each other as we opened for international talented DJs that came through the Northwest. After hearing one of his opening sets before I hopped on, I knew I had to get him on my LOST podcast.  According to him, he composed this mix while looking out his window, watching gray wax into night. Inspired by the eternal grey, juxtaposed with some vibrant greens, let's get lost in some mad cumulonimbus clouds, with Marco :)

L O S T in a Rainy Day with Marco Valencia

Since I discovered Soundcloud and the realms of music, I've come across plenty of amazing and talented friends.  I easily fall down the rabbit hole when it comes to the internet in general, and Soundcloud is arguably the biggest and easiest hole for me to fall into. It almost seems like no matter what, there is an infinite amount of unique sounds and good vibes all over the world, and they can be found at the touch of a button. 

One of my rabbit hole tumbling sessions led me to Lars Middelhede, otherwise known as Disfunctional Disco, a talented DJ from Copenhagen. He has been a prominent selector in their house scene for many years now. In the last year it was clear to me that our music journeys were leading in similar paths, so I had to have him on my LOST series.  I asked him what kind of journey he wanted to tell through music.... so he came back to me with the word INFINITY.  But what does that even mean? 

"I have always been fascinated by the concept, and somehow i think it represents what i feel about music quite accurate, the terms boundlessness, limitlessness often cross my mind when i listen to and think about music and sounds.

Infinity remains in the realm of the abstract. The human mind seems to have created the concept, yet can we even really picture what it looks like? it has driven many of our greatest minds to madness, it comes in different sizes, both large and small, which again, is hard to fathom. Is music infinite, is sound creation limitless ? Sometimes i feel it is, and i always try to make my mixes big, full of soundscapes and rhythms which makes the mind wander and spirit drift."

The Planisphere of Dendera is one of the oldest astronomical messages left on the humanity by ancient Egyptian priests. Also known as the Dendera Zodiac or the Zodiac of Osiris (as it was dedicated to Osiris) and was located in the temple complex of Hathor in Dendera, a small town on the nile, close to Luxor.

The Dendera Zodiac is an ancient astronomical map which contains all the information needed to calculate the movement of Earth from one zodiac sign to another for approximately 30000 years, which corresponds to the axial precession cycle.

The ancient Egyptians knew well the secrets of precession and the basis of their calculations is the great year – 25,920 years. One astrological era is equal to 1/12 of the precession of Earth’s axis and corresponds to 2160 years.

The celestial arch is represented by a disc held up by four pillars of the sky in the form of women, between which are inserted falcon-headed spirits.

The four pairs of figures represent the cardinal points, while all twelve figures indicate the months. In the inner circle, the main fixed stars are shown for orientation, and the circle is divided into 36 deans, each resulting in an Egyptian week of ten days.

In this way the stars were observed and recorded over thousands of years, with incredible precision. These are known to us today as constellations, each one has its place in the sky and can be observed at a certain time.

I was recently rewatching Game of Thrones, and the scene where Dany gets surrounded by a horde of Dothraki stood out to me. The song was epic, but you could barely hear it with the horses running around. So I sampled it and some other Dothraki sounds into this behemoth. 

May it be the soundtrack to our battle with the One True God in 7 hells.

Blood of my Blood

One of the many joys I've found from this whole music journey is all the connections I've made with people from around the world, many I haven't even met in real life. Sharing a similar passion with others is a beautiful thing.

A while back I had the pleasure of connecting with Dunmore Park.  We shared similar music interests and I got the opportunity to create a mix for his Parkcast series, a really cool project of his. I had to return the favor, so I asked him whenever he was feeling inspired by something in his life, and wanted to share that with me and the world, that I would be happy to have him on. 

Recently he spent some time this month exploring the Yucatan region of Mexico.  Like me and most others, we sort of find certain music while traveling that sticks with us and reminds us of the great memories we make on the trips. L O S T in the Yucatán with Dunmore Park

I have always been a fan of fantasy stories. Tales of magic, different worlds, wizards... they fill my heart and make me feel like a child again. I have been LOST in one such story lately, a story given to me by a close friend...

Grymmar, the most ancient of forests, harbored mystery beyond the means of comprehension for most beings. Seeds that were planted by magic botanists, the Ancients, have since turned to halls of trees with rippling bark beards that resemble the very old ones who planted them. The secrets of these Ancients have been passed down to a single creature: Elkheart, caretaker of Grymmar and of the LOST souls who pass through. Once a cast away and forgotten soul himself, Elkheart’s journey led him through Grymmar on the way to prepare for the greatest battle of his generation. Along his wooded path, Elkheart met the last Ancient who presented him a gift of a large seed and a message: "A time will come when you will need this seed to save your life in the coming struggle. If you choose to use it, your life will be preserved. It will allow you to live out your life as you see fit but, when the natural end comes, your soul will be claimed by Grymmar to take my place as the last Ancient who cares for these halls." The deal was struck and, when the time came, the seed saved his life. The story of this battle remains for another day, but Elkheart did not break his word and took up the mantle of the final Ancient.

Once lost, Elkheart has found himself among the woods of Grymmar and those who pass through have a guide that lights the way.

Elkheart the L O S T Magician

Life threw me a curve ball recently. I found myself in the hospital, as I had a bit of an accident that left me a bit hobbled and unable to be active. This allowed me to connect more with my couch potato side. Films, Tv, video games, you name it, that's been my life lately :D

I felt it was a perfect segway into my next LOST mix, and I had the perfect person to tell me a story. Meet Brian Becker, a good friend from Seattle. This man has been pursuing his passions of film soundtracks, piano composition, and finding himself through the sounds he loves. I asked him if he wanted to do a LOST mix. Here is his take:

L O S T in a Cue with Brian Becker

Ah, 2019. What a year it's been. I don't know about y'all but mine has been quite insane... especially this summer.

One of my highlights was playing a small festival out in the middle of the woods / on a lake front for one of my best friend's birthday parties. He threw a little festival for himself and asked me to close the whole night out. 3am to 6am. woof. Not to mention the fact that it was the day after I landed in Seattle from Germany. double Woof. I was so delirious, tired, all the feels you'd expect.

I played a mix of downtempo, with a dash of hip hop throwbacks and instrumentals I had, because most of the crowd was dying out so I wanted to experiment. A select group of friends stayed up the entire time, and when I finally gave the decks a rest, one friend told me "dude, that was the most gangster set I've ever heard....it was tribal, it was earthy and spiritual, but it had like, a thuggish attitude about it..."

I smiled and laughed, but it stuck with me for the rest of summer and into fall. Jungle spiritual beats with a thug attitude about it... interesting... Thus...this mix, was born!

I've been working on this mix for a few months, so apologies for the tardiness. I wanted to really nail the story, the setting. I envisioned a concrete jungle perhaps... a throwback gangster jungle ride... hehe. There hasn't been a LOST mix out in a while. I went through so many takes, so many mistakes, bad mixes, but this one was a journey. I honestly could have recorded another hour or so, I have so many sick edits I wanted to include but I figured it's already waaaay too long haha!

February... in Seattle, it's filled with grey clouds and rain. Lately, it has been extra grey and moody. I've been longing for sun, for fun, for adventures, and recently, I've been missing my last vacation to Berlin. 

One of my highlights of my Fall Berlin trip was hunting for music for my KataHaifisch guest mix, which was created by @nico-tober. I did this on long train rides, or just walking around Berlin on soundcloud. I am forever grateful for receiving the invitation to create a mix for the KataHaifisch series, as I have been a fan for sometime. I greatly value Nico's style, his DJing skills, and his storytelling in his own mix series, so naturally I asked him to create a LOST mix for me :D

I'm always curious what sort of inspiration my friends use for their mixes.  LOST in the Ether... what exactly comes to my mind when I think of that? The void... staring up at the sky, infinite movement, no precise location.... disappearing....the essence of the universe.

L O S T in the Ether with Nico Tober

I'm sure many of you wonder where I got this idea for a mix series. LOST. Outer Space...The Ballet...in Kyoto. So many places I've gotten LOST in. Truth be told, in my journey to discover this new musical passion, I was struggling to find my identity, as most artists tend to do. I dove down the rabbit hole that was soundcloud, mix after mix, track after track, I started finding inspiration from all sorts of artists.

One artist in particular had quite an impact. It all started with those gosh darn Juicy Spring Peaches ;) This mix of his was the first I found, and I spent HOURS listening to it. "what is this tune?!, id please?!, bomb track! gah!!!" are some of the replies you can find on that mix from me, no doubt. This mix was instrumental in inspiring me to do my own mix series. Slowly but surely, I started putting these LOST mixes out, mainly just by myself, a way to release some creative energy. As it continued to gain popularity, I started getting messages from like-minded artists, wanting to share their LOST stories.

And then, full circle, much like life itself, Mr. Filip and his Juicy Peaches came forth from whatever land this traveling spiritual nomad was in, ready to guide all us LOST dancers into his soul.

Today I am EXTRA happy, as I get to present his wonderful LOST mix :)

"On a day to day basis I am involved with music, whether it is listening to music, getting the newest releases, making soundscapes, meditation music or producing tracks, music is completely ingrained into my life. The music I download for my DJ sets or guestmixes, I organize in different playlists. When I know I will be making a guestmix for some channel, I create a playlist and start moving tracks in there which I feel will fit the mood that I have in mind for the mix I am going to make. I always keep in mind what the channel is about, so that its vision as well as my idea come together at a point that I will find suitable for a guestmix. Since I play a broad variety of electronic music, there are many paths I can take. For podcasts I like to include tunes that I would not always play in the club, but that I really do like and feel they are fitting for listening in a home environment, whether it is on headphones, or speakers at home. It also gives me the opportunity to play a broader variety of tunes. For the episode of LOST I decided to go with a 'mid tempo' (between what I call downtempo and uptempo) mix, filled with a variety of emotional tunes. As my emotions are quite dynamic, this can be often seen in my music as well, from melancholic to happy, I love to put in the emotions I feel on that moment. I used to overthink my mixes when I was getting started as a dj, but nowadays I go with the flow of what my energy brings at that moment. In the weeks before, I have already started creating a playlist to choose from, so on the moment of crafting my mix, my imprint is already there." -Filip

With all the negativity surrounding the state of the world, most of us turn to music for comfort.  I tried to get take advantage of this time alone at home to work on spreading the music I love, but I'd be lying if I said it was easy to get inspired. I take comfort in knowing I'm not the only one.... I tried and I tried to make a new LOST mix that somehow related to being Quarantined, but I came up empty handed. Luckily for me, I have some artistic friends from around the world!

After hearing Bill Gates' TED-talk I knew I had to alter his voice and use in a set to confront the audience with Covid-19. Spend some time alone.

We've all been spending a lot of time alone these days haven't we?  Having to be apart from our friends and even families, for so long.  This alone time has been good for some, but each week it seems like the world takes a new and dark turn.   I wrote this edit right when this whole quarantine hit. I thought to myself, this will be the perfect tune for everyone needing a bit of uplifting energy... and to add a bit of joy to everyone's solitary confinement. Yet, each week I thought to release it,  there would be something in the world that would pop up, and each week it never felt like the right time....

One after another, from covid19 to police brutalities, peaceful protests ending in violence, burning cities,  tear gassing citizens, so much death and destruction live streamed for the world, and we are all glued to it. This snowball seems to keep on going....and this road ahead doesn't seem bright now.....But I have hope.

I spent a lot of time dancing to this edit alone in my basement. and it made me smile. I hope it brings a little smile to your face, and you find yourself dancing alone, maybe in your basement, your kitchen, on a jog, with your dog.  Let me know if you do! Thanks for listening, and thanks to the Heimlich hooligans for letting me release it with them. I hope we can all dance together very soon.

Tame Impala - One More Hour (Samaha Loves Again Edit)

2020 has been an eye opening year, revealing many things about our friends, family, and ourselves. One such thing I've noticed is how we all live in our own little bubbles.  All our connections, people we associate with, brands and companies we like and follow on social media, everything so rapidly consumed and absorbed day in and day out, it is only now in confinement where I've become more aware of this....

On a semi-related side note,  I'm a huge basketball fan. Any of my close friends would know this, so I've been ecstatic that the NBA has returned. Each player is living inside a literal bubble give the Pandemic. This basketball bubble has had my full attention these last 2 weeks... so I found it quite funny and a fantastic coincidence that a fellow DJ and Tony @aka_tony came to me with a LOST mix idea with the theme of "BUBBLES," Soap bubbles to be exact.  Thomas Williams alias @aka_tony started out as a DJ in Switzerland in the last century. I discovered him since he's played a few of my tracks in his mixes (thanks bud).  Since 2018 he spreads love and nice tunes as a resident at Radio GDS.FM in Zurich, where he has his own broadcasting slot. With Aka-Tapes Thomas runs his own podcast blog on Soundcloud. In the last couple of months he has crafted various podcasts for different channels around the globe. 

I was curious, so I asked him, how did this theme originate? His response was:

"After an eventful, beautiful and challenging decade in which people seemed to have found peace, determination and clarity, the situation changed abruptly. Almost from one day to the next, uncertainty, great challenges and suspicion returned. Everything and anything was questioned and the most adventurous theories made the rounds. People soon no longer knew who was friend or foe. Information was interpreted in a way that always protected their own interests. Objectivity and attentiveness were lost. To deal with this situation, creative people discovered the concept of the soap bubble. Soap bubbles with which one could wrap all the abstruse theories and theorists and gently send them on a journey of knowledge. So they discovered that the earth was not a flat disk after all and said also goodbye to many other absurd theories. So if you are desperate about all the uncertainties that will challenge you in the present and the near future, this mix will help you to wrap gruesome ideas and concepts into a soap bubble and send them on the much needed journey of knowledge."

L O S T In Soap Bubbles By Aka-Tony

It's been quite a year for all of us. Locked away in our homes....unable to see friends or family....  It's hard to get LOST when you can't go anywhere. My inspiration is at an all time low, and as the days start melting into weeks, months, years.... How is it almost March again!? I still haven't processed the last one....

And yet, with how turbulent this last year has been, there have been little flashes of brilliance....flickers of hope, and even new friends made.  One such friend is this cool cat Moro.... a fellow downtempo savant from the Pacific Northwest.  We seem to have connected even moro--so (heheh) in this Pandemic, as we both figured out how to navigate the live stream world with our dj sets... and to keep the live music flames of passion burning when iconic music venues in our states closed down. Who is Moro...no....

Where is MORO? 

If you ask him, he probably won't be able to pinpoint his current location. Instead he'll tell you he's on an endless journey of self-discovery and self-awareness. What he will also tell you is that he feels he is on the right path because of one key behavioral change: self-love. 

Because of the way his brain works, MORO often gets LOST in his thoughts. These wayward wanderings take him to the highest heights of his creativity but also the lowest lows of self-doubt, stress, and Emotional Turbulence. So what does self-love have to do with any of this? Embracing the lows with self-compassion is just as important as celebrating the highs with self-adulation; acknowledging and lovingly accepting the bad helps us appreciate the good.
