L.A.: a city which draws artists from all over the world, daring them to make the move to the famed West Coast and take a shot at living out their dreams…but not all are met with a red carpet welcome. Written during a time when Samantha Schultz found Los Angeles testing her sanity, the song tells of the difficult realities creatives endure in an oversaturated entertainment industry. 

Feeling like she’s been tumbling through the ups and downs of a dreamlike world, Schultz sings of the trickiness in searching for one’s voice and place in Los Angeles. Often having to walk a thin line between using her skills to create original music and needing them to make rent, she pulls back the veil on what it takes to make it in an industry where vanity and connection seem to prevail above all. 

Now over a decade into living in The City of Angels, Samantha has undergone much inner-growth to take on a new, positive mindset around her adopted home; not every day is glamorous, but with the right community, inner calm, and perseverance, there’s nowhere else she’d be rather to live than this coveted music destination…where you never know what the new day might bring.

In a world more chaotic and judgemental than ever, "Day By Day" reminds us to slow down, take a breath, & freely embrace the most authentic version of ourselves. Written when my own purpose/confidence in life was in question, my dear friend/co-producer Dave Mackay and I had important life conversations on how to make this song feel like a warm, safe hug for anyone feeling lost in a highlight-reel world of "RIGHT NOW or never"! We're all going to be okay - we just gotta take it "Day By Day."

I had the opportunity to record an amazing song, original done by the beautiful Corinne Bailey Rae, in my Spring 2011 Recording Ensemble at Berklee.

This is Samantha's first release since 2011. Initially a love song, it was flipped on its head to be about finding your self-confidence & letting go of the things in your life that may be in your comfort zone, but don't actually work for you - perfect for the New Year. The live off-the-floor vibe provided by this band of some of Sam's closest friends captures the authentic & raw elements that she hopes listeners can relate to with with soul and jazz as the driving force behind the rebirth her music.

Out of My Head

Astronomical Love is a metaphor-packed story about discovering an out-of-this-world love. Samantha's emotionally captivating vocal performance is lifted by spacey guitar parts, romantic piano, and sweeping background vocals. Supported by a cast of phenomenal musicians and close friends, this dreamy power ballad was inspired by the divas of the 1990s and envelopes listeners in a larger-than-life mix. Lyrically poetic, this song is the perfect soundtrack for moments where love speaks the loudest.

Astronomical Love

Fire Breather reveals the moment in an argument where a statement is misinterpreted and emotions take over the ability to think logically. The internal struggle between knowing one has a good heart and trying to see clearly when feeling wronged plays out through the dynamic energy of the band's live R&B inspired performance and the power of Schultz's fiery vocal. Culminating in a high-octane guitar solo, Fire Breather takes you through the stages of anger while still trying to remain introspective and hopeful.

Fire Breather

"The Quiet" is an honest take on the moments of overwhelming anxiety and unrest so many felt in a year packed with the explosion of a global pandemic; vast unemployment; police brutality; systemic racism; and political corruption and divide. Originally written about Samantha's own ways of coping in moments of darkness, this song took on a greater meaning as the rest of such a tragic year unfolded.

This song was a collaboration between Samantha Schultz (who was located in Los Angeles, CA; Edmonton, Canada; and San Antonio, TX throughout 2020), and producer Dave Mackay (living in Leicester, UK). As two musicians who had their entire livelihoods affected by the pandemic and the inability to play live shows, Samantha and Dave found themselves pouring much of the uncertainty they were feeling into the production of this song.

Sometimes when it's too much in this loud, frenzied world, a quiet moment with someone we trust is what we need in order to reset and keep going to work toward a better day.
