Overlaying of Time Signatures - 6/8 on 5/4
Modesty is a collection of musical and lyrical explorations squished into the format of a contemporary EP. Musically the piece explores music at a frequency level (white noise, layering of sine waves, reversing frequency, filters), unconventional harmonies (secundal chords, sixths, sevenths, ninths, diminished chords, and dissonance), time signature changes and overlays (for example from 4/4 to 5/4 to 6/8 in Superiority and 5/4 over 6/8 in ), with a special focus on the sounds and possibilities on the electric guitar (distortion as beautiful, false and true harmonics, ornamentation such as slides, tapping, bends). This is used to support lyrics that explore notions of Third-Wave Feminism and the female endotic. The experience of playing and consuming music as a woman is central to my studies as an undergraduate and beyond. The EP itself is recorded in Ableton using samples, distant mic’ing, sine wave layering, filtration, and panning. The performance strips the EP down to its essentials and refocuses on the sound of the electric guitar and the lyrics.

Sam Hughes is a creative artist working in music and visual arts fields. Her practice involves producing contemporary music that blends acoustic instrumentation with an edge of experimental electronic manipulation. She is especially interested in the effect of both gender and the visual image on music creation and perception, having written thesis on the former and working towards an honours creative work with the latter. Previously she has performed at Illawarra and Riverina venues and festivals solo with acoustic guitar, piano, and vocals.
