Gawdat is a duo that turns venues upside down - a name associated with unrestrained, feelgood vibes and a live performance unmatched on a regional level. The Cairo-based duo are heavily influenced by 90’s R&B culture, classic soul, and jazzy basslines, which form the basis of their signature sound and groove-laden mixing style.

Having infiltrated the scene across the country early on, the duo is considered one of Egypt’s elite imprints, having played nearly every major event within the borders since 2013. The brothers proved to be a unique embodiment of equal parts energy and technical capability. This led them to being called upon for international performances since 2015, a pivotal point in their young careers.

Gawdat have played alongside some of the industry’s heavyweights such as Jamie Jones, Marco Carola, The Martinez Brothers, Luciano, Loco Dice and Bedouin to name a few.

2022 has certainly been a career-affirming year that has seen them perform at esteemed festivals including Caprices, Sunwaves, Enchanted Forest (a five-hour closing set), Überhaus in Egypt, two sold out London shows, as well as sets on lineups with DJ Tennis, Carlita, The Martinez Brothers, Jamie Jones and many more. 

On the production front, they are poised to release some new unique music in the coming year as they continue to amplify their profile on a global scale. Off the back of their best year yet, It’s fair to say Gawdat are just getting started…

This time he links with JAW and Erik Peers for a pair of superb new singles. The Mekanism has already had a huge year with a new tune on Manda Moor and Sirus Hood's Moon Child label, an EP on New York label Boogeyman and previous fine outings on Robsoul Recordings, Moan Recordings, Do Not Sleep and Whippin' Records, always with a subtle evolution each and every time. 🌎

About You feat. JAW opens up with a prying low end and drums that swagger beneath the whispered vocals that bring stark soul. It's a menacing cut for late night floors. Dancing Head feat. Erik Peers is another gem, this time with lithe tech house drums and filtered, smoky vocals that bring plenty of charm next to wispy sci-fi pads. 

These are two detailed and evocative new cuts from this French maestro.

Search and Resistance in "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"
In Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," the striking repetition of "Everybody's looking for something" highlights a universal search for satisfaction, but also highlights the frustration of desires that always seem unattainable. Annie Lennox revealed that the lyrics emerged in a moment of despair and nihilism, which is reflected in the disenchanted worldview presented in the song: sweet dreams are made of expectations and illusions that everyone chases, with no guarantee of fulfillment.
The lines "Some of them want to use you / Some of them want to get used by you / Some of them want to abuse you / Some of them want to be abused" expose the dynamics of power and manipulation in human relationships. They suggest that, in the search for satisfaction, people can either exploit or submit to others. The chorus "Hold your head up, movin' on" serves as advice to preserve dignity and carry on, even in the face of uncertainty and exploitation. The context of the composition, marked by the personal and professional difficulties of the Eurythmics members, reinforces the song's tone of resignation and resilience, which has become a symbol for those facing adversity and needing to continue searching for meaning amidst chaos.
