Next up on @idlecellars mix series is a beautiful mix from @briannotbrian. His history is firmly rooted in his hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Residencies and guest spots in the city's most respected hip-hop, funk, soul and disco nights throughout the mid to late 90's saw him broaden his tastes and cement his skills as a seasoned selector. It was the spirit of growing up in Northern Ireland and his experiences in Belfast that saw him bring his own style and flavor to London at the turn of the millenium. Starting from scratch, obsessively digging, buying records and building new relationships in the metropolis gave Brian the opportunity to put on lots of parties and DJ alongside his friends and eventually his heroes. It also helped that he was putting in shifts behind the counters of the city's premier record spots including: MVE, Phonica, Kristina and Rye Wax. Armed with a heavyweight record collection and a solid crew of close musical friends, Brian co-ran the now infamous, musically open and freestyle minded 'Special Needs' parties that lasted almost 8 years at various venues around the city. 

In more recent times Brian has traveled the world playing music with gigs in Australia, Brazil, the USA and Canada as well as regular trips all over the UK and Europe. These global excursions have no doubt been bolstered by the record label that Brian set up with his longtime friend Salik Z - Going Good. An open-minded and sonically adventurous imprint that has achieved worldwide acclaim. Brian continues to play music far and wide with sets at festivals like Dekmantel, Meadows In The Mountains, Farr Festival and a yearly residency at Kala Festival in Albania. With a deep collection of eclectic music, knowledge and skills to match, Brian has a thirst for sounds of all kinds and enjoys joining often disparate dots and connections between records. This special mix for Idle Cellars is intended to evoke that late night / early morning feel, a selection of new finds, old faves and even some unreleased gems..... probably best listened to outside, on a good system and with a drink in hand ✨🍷✨

Here's a mix of german only tracks by my friend Gero. Connected through the love for obscure german fleamarket finds we have been exchanging oddities for a couple of years now. Gero is a gentlemen enjoying his finds in silence and it was hard work getting him to record a mix. Funnily he seems to have enjoyed it a lot and promised a sequel already (which might be coming soon as I have missed to post this here mix for months - mit der Bitte um Vergebung!) . Q: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

Thank you for having me! After the sun finally showed up here in Berlin a few weeks ago I managed to get my ass up and put some music together. There were a few records I recently picked up with that certain summer mood I was in plus a few things I wanted to upload on the channel since a bit. Tried to make sense of all this with the rest of the things that are standing around here. I guess you can definitely get all your besties in a car, roll the windows down and blast this mix on your next adventure but listen for yourself! 


Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

I have a certain emotional connection with that Johnny Star 7 Inch. Treated myself to it after handing in my bachelor thesis which has been a carousel ride for itself. Thanks again to Norm who was willing to let go of his spare. 


Q: How do you dig for new music?

I had phases were a spend a lot of time on Discogs but also love hitting up shops and flea markets especially while being on holidays and just going through everything that is there. Always looking for things that I haven’t seen before hoping it will either deliver a mood or make you want to dance. 


Q: One record you will never let go, one that doesn’t want to leave your waitlist and one guilty pleasure?

I will never let go of my copy of Yola Polastri’s Discoteque LP. Caminado Bajo El Sol is one of my all-time favs that pushes all the right buttons. 

One record that doesn’t want to leave my wantlist is the Spiegel B – Cool Down single. Didn’t pull the trigger the last time a copy popped up. Hit me up if you are willing to let yours go! 

One big guilty pleasure must be the whole Mini Stars series on Dino Music. They feature popular dance music tracks mostly from the 80s but with German lyrics sang by kids for kids. Please check out Jacqueline - Ferien Auf Dem Ponyhof which is a version of Jason Donovan’s Sealed With A Kiss to get an idea of what I am talking about. Too many great tracks to list here but if you understand German these will definitely put a smile on your face! 


Q: Music bonds people. Any djs/shops/etc.. you would like to shout out?

Sure thing! Very happy to have many passionate music lovers in my close circle. First of all William who encouraged me to record my first mix ever, Sandra (Frinda Di Lanco) and Henna Stein for giving me Italian lessons, the two Balearic Bananas Marvin und Phil, Dangerous Dave who’s is probably the most underrated DJ in Berlin (book him!), Los Chavales from Radio Relativa. I am sure I forgot some, but you know who you are! <3

"Being at an Albion gig is like entering a bedouin tent and for the first time ever smell the scent of an exotic spice that you could imagine living with for the rest of your life." 

He is a DJ who doesn't merely take you on another drum journey, but adds an extra dimension where preconception doesn't apply. It can take a while to get used to it though. Because sophistication never went out of style, it just took more than three decades to catch up with it. And when the coin finally dropped, Albion was there to pick it up. In 2004 he realized that he could set out on a musical journey that no DJ had done before him. Over the last years he has recorded more than a hundred mixes and has steadily built up a worldwide following.

With the groundbreaking Mixtura mixes, he rediscovered and brought together European disco tracks that had been lost and forgotten since the heydays, Albion defined his own sound, which he refers to as Continental Disco Sound.
