the year is slowly coming to an end and what a year it was. music gave me the opportunity to travel places, play for communities that i could only dream of just a blink of an eye ago. it let me be who i am and showed me once again what incredible bliss being with the right people in the right place at the right moment can bring.

one of my goals this year was to play more shows and gain experience as a dj. sometimes it felt like i was succeeding, sometimes it felt like things went astray - especially times when i tried to prove something to people that i was something i am not. there was euphoria and empty dancefloors, doubts next to high spirits - but in the end it feels like it was all well worth it.

with all this in mind i sat(!) down and recorded club random (六). the mix felt like a 2h long meditation. it’s colourful and fluid, sometimes dark yet bright, airy and dense all at the same time. hope you enjoy the ride!

We are extremely happy to feature a dear friend from our home city of Munich, @samgoku, in this 20th episode of the Herbarium mix series. He is such a colourful artist as his specialty is to combine multiple genre styles and create an organic conceptual journey with these gems. This also applies to this beautiful mix which he put together for us. He deep dives into precious harmonious textural ambient, tribal rhythms and catchy melodic instrumental references.

About Sam Goku's choice of plant: 
The 'Epiphyllum oxypetalum', or 'queen of the night', blooms only once a year. Its flower opens at night and closes again before sunrise. There is also one growing on the staircase at my parents' home – it’s a mix that feels special and close to home at the same time.

It is a satisfying experience when an artist manages to create a modern sound by implementing what makes dance music so dearly appreciated amongst enthusiasts: Blended noises, repetition and some cheeky, unexpected madness.

Sam Goku does that in his productions - with a sleek straightforwardness that one would not expect from a rather hypnotic beat.

While appearances in some of Europes most established clubs and his eclectic set at the final rendition of Secret Garden Party put him on the map, he has never stopped to refine his skills as a mixer and selector.

He skilfully plays his way through myriads of subgenres and microcosm in the realm of (leftfield) house, techno and bass music, developing sets that are equally characterized by buoyant ease and yet great depth in the rhythmic, melodic and sonic details.

Herbarium No 20 - Sam Goku - Epiphyllum Oxypetalum

He watched from his balcony, gazing as the water moved slowly inwards as the sun set in the distance. It were as if the world had fallen asleep, there was nothing but the sound of the woods and the trees around him as he gazed out upon the shimmering ocean. 

The tides under the moonlight were a beautiful thing - they operated under their own timeline, moving in and out in line with the circadian rhythms of a chaotic world. Yet still, they resembled peace. 

He retired to bed, dreaming of the world beyond the window. 

Sam Goku is set to release a new EP on Dekmantel, it is a tour de force of a record demonstrating a deep knowledge of ethereal dance music as he balances the sensibilities of Trance and Techno with careful precision.

Chinese-German artist @samgoku has a distinctive take on techno that draws on his own Asian heritage and blends it with contemporary electronics. Across two sublime albums for Atomnation and Permanent Vacation, he has infused his fluid rhythms with gorgeous melodies and ambient haze, traditional Eastern instruments and ethereal moods. This summer, he debuted on the Dekmantel label with four tracks of unconventional techno that marry the physical with the emotional in exceptional style.

There are plenty of similar contrasts in this week's mix, which is an almost two-hour dive into his sound world. It is a deep and compelling blend of supple rhythms that are always subtly shifting. His pristine selections take in dubby and cavernous grooves, tripped-out minimal details and stylish techno cuts that always come with plenty of colour and high-definition designs which lend the whole thing a futurist edge but very human soul.

Dekmantel Podcast 474 - Sam Goku

The next Far Blue concept is created by Sam Goku, a multifaceted DJ and producer, whose music we’ve been admiring for a while. In his mixes, the Chinese-German artist blends music from different styles and genres, while keeping the listener attracted to a coherent and ever surprising musical journey.  This unique and distinct sound comes through beautifully in his interpretation of Far Blue.

“I recorded this mix right after i came back from my asia tour. maybe it reflects the serenity i feel after returning from an inspiring trip - i felt very unrushed while recording it. what i also took home from this trip is a renewed fascination for textures of all kinds, which gave this mix its name. i hope you enjoy :)”

The 17th edition of our MOMENT Archives series, which captures the raw energy and atmosphere of our artists’ live performances, features a very special set from Sam Goku, who made his debut visit to Japan this year.

He performed on two stages during the event — delivering a groovy, body-moving house set on the dance floor, and later, a beautiful and serene morning set that gently blended into the fresh early air.

The mix we’re sharing today is his stunning BAR floor set — warm, layered, and full of character, truly reflecting his personality. Sam himself mentioned that this is one of his favorite sets, and we’re honored to share it as part of our archive series.

"I wanted to record a set with faster pace and a higher energy and I had put together a playlist with recent favourites in that category - but when I started recording, the tracks I had gathered didn't really fit the vibe at that moment (mainly because I was recording in a studio and not at a party) so I dug into other folders and made some spontaneous choices. 
the mix still became energetic and pacey but more suited to the listening experience."

there were a few moments this year - behind the booth and on the floor - that felt really profound. each time it was that subtle, inevitable pull of loopy, restrained dance music that took led me into that state only rhythm can put you in.

this mix traces an inward-to-outward drift: a slow, glistening rise from the depth of the ocean to a sun-kissed surface, if you will.

it’s also the first club random where i mixed some vinyl. one turntable and two digital decks for now, but it already gave me a wonderful new sense of perspective and depth in mixing.
