Once upon a time, V.I.V.E.K Sharda was unhappy with the sound at UK nightclubs and parties—sound that he felt couldn't capture the deepest, truest vibrations of the music he wanted to play and hear—so he just made his own sound system. (Naturally, he called it System.) That should give you an idea of how seriously Sharda takes his wubs and his sub-bass, and if you have even a passing interest in UK sound system culture or dub's crossover with dance music—including, yes, dubstep—then you've probably heard of V.I.V.E.K, or at least heard one of his chest-rattling records.

Along with producers like Om Unit and Kryptic Minds—both of whom feature in the mix below—Sharda has never been one for following trends or concerned about scenes. Instead, he's fully devoted to the pulse of dub and the luxury of bassweight. He's put out slow but steady stream of ultra-heavy releases on his own labels System Music and VIVEK, and now he's on a mission to change perceptions of what 140 BPM music can sound like. That's what you'll hear on his RA Podcast, a meditative and occasionally tectonically-shifting mix that highlights dubstep, dub and its many offshoots—not just staggered drums and subterranean low-end but smooth swing and soulful melodies, too.

This is the mix down of a 10 channel sculptural sound installation I made exhibited at the Arnolfini in 'A weekend at Hotel Palenque' in July 2023. Each channel had its own silo made from corrugated tin the vascular of the countryside causing an ever changing and at times room shaking rumbling soundscape constructed of field recordings from around my studio in Dorset. The diner was exceptionally busy as he opened the front door into the plastic coated maze. The smell of bacon radiated from deep inside the restaurant as if it were a part of the very furniture itself. Waitresses ran hurriedly between impatient tables pouring drinks and serving customers. They looked frazzled beneath the artifical glow of the neon lights... Breakfast at Wendys was always a finely tuned affair, a cultural eye opener if you will.

Iwan Wirth and Haley Mellin talk with Tania Bryer about sustainability in the art world.

Two years before his death at the age of 90, the artist and lifelong environmental activist Gustav Metzger told an interviewer that he continued to hold out hope for humans preserving their only planet as a habitable home. ‘We have the potential now of major, major transformations in understanding our world and in reshaping it,’ Metzger said in 2015. ‘It’s not all doom and gloom by any means.’ But he cautioned: ‘The main problem is that we think we are on top. We always dominate the natural world, and we are determined to go on doing so. The problems are endless and cumulative.’

The commercial and institutional art worlds, impelled in part by the moral example of artists like Metzger, have begun to make more substantial strides in recent years towards addressing those problems in their own realm. And the pandemic has now intensified the imperative for doing more. On the occasion of an announcement by Hauser & Wirth that it will appoint its first global head of environmental sustainability and work to cut its carbon emissions in half by 2030, Iwan Wirth, the gallery’s co-founder and president, recently joined the artist Haley Mellin, founder of the conservation organization Art to Acres, for a discussion—moderated by the CNBC host Tania Bryer—about how the art world can move more quickly to become a better environmental citizen.
