What happens when a #guitarist is in #selfisolation with #COVID19 for 7 days? A crazy guitar solo!!! In the trees. I was isolating for 7 days as per #NewZealand guidelines, and I knew I had to set my mind to something to get over the virus and find the cure. I had some of my unrecorded jazz compositions running through my head. It was perfect, since I didn't feel like using my voice anyway. So I strapped on my stringer and I laid down the guitars to a nice midi bass and drum groove I had programmed earlier. Man, what a great thing to do when you're sick, play the guitar, I'll tell you that much for free.

Fortunately I didn't get hit too hard by #COVID and I was able to record this song from my #isolation bedroom. It's called Windy Step because I wrote it while looking out my window at a tree swaying solemnly in the wind and marvelling at its beauty. Yes, it is the same tree you can see in the back of the video. Quite a cool video effect that one! The song is written in the odd 5 4 time signature which feels a bit reminiscent of trying to tread through a heavy breeze! Just imagine it!!!

Jokes aside, I was highly inspired by Nir Felder for this tune and if you haven't checked out his album II, I would highly recommend it. I would also just like to mention that I am hugely inspired by the music of #johnfrusciante of the #RedHotChiliPeppers and I am extremely excited for his return on the #fender #stratocaster for #unlimitedlove. #StadiumArcadium meant a lot to me as a kid and still does, what a great bloody album.

Rather than improvising, I thought I'd compose and record a solo so I started off along the lines of Albatross by #FleetwoodMac with some slow bends mixed with some volume knob swells like #jeffbeck. But then all of a sudden I was struck by lightning like #kirkhammett from #metallica, or #aldimeola and #pacodelucia on Mediterranean Sundance. I had to balance off this moment of intense shredding with a #jimihendrix style lick mixed with a bit of #charliechristian into some #joesatriani slides.
