My entry for the r/trance February mix competition, label showcase. Because I'm pretty worn on trance right now, I decided to mix something that's decidedly not trance, but still very "trancey" in my books.  I've been a fan of this style of techno for a bit now, and finally getting to try my hand at mixing it was quite liberating. Plus I think this kind of music aligns quite well with how I've been feeling recently.

This was a blast to put together, this music offers so much more freedom in mixing strategy. For the first time in a long time, I felt the limitation of having 2 decks, as there were multiple points where I would have rather looped parts of one track while overlaying another in a transition rather than just playing one track as is. I'm definitely going to be doing more in this style at some point!

It's been a while!

2021 was a year of discovery and discontent for me. While I wouldn't say that my tastes have changed, I learned a sound in trance that I thought had died years ago was still alive and well, while the modern sounds that I gravitated to grew more stale than ever. Part one of my 2021 reprise is highlighting the producers who are bringing back the sounds of the late 1990s and early 2000s. All of the tunes in this mix were released in 2021.

Thanks to the r/realproghouse discord (especially the #everything-else channel, aka where the good stuff gets posted) for the fresh digs all through the pandemic.

I'll get around to recording a part 2 that's more inline with the harder stuff I usually mix soon!

Exposure 070 - 2021 Reprise Part 1, The Revival (12.16.21)

Basically a slightly modified version of my longer 2021 Reprise mix: https://soundcloud.com/sammymmm/exposure-070. I had to squeeze things down to an hour but I wanted to leave basically the last 30 minutes or so unchanged. The first bit (mainly Paiste really) admittedly feels a bit disjoint as a result, but I really wanted to squeeze in Megatrance 2! 

The mix won on a technicality. It finished 2nd in voting but the top mix was disqualified for being mostly progressive house and techno.

Damaged Records, run by Jordan Suckley, was the first label that really captivated me when I started listening to trance much more seriously and started messing around with mixing. The variance and innovation in many of their earlier tracks kept me excited for every new release. After going through their discography recently, I figured I ought to record a Damaged exclusive mix, showcasing some of their face-melting tracks! Original description: "Finally moved into my new place and got my speakers set up, so I dusted off the ol mixer for the first time in a few months. I'm fresh from seeing Grum & Fehrplay followed by Fleming & Lawrence, so my track selection's a lot deeper than usual. 2 hours, first hour deep and dark, second hour a bit housier. Here's my winning mix for the r/trance October 2017 mix competition! Halloween spoopy type stuff was the theme of the mixcomp. Normally I don't put a whole lot of preparation into my mixes, but I spent days planning the tracklist this time around. First track's a bit out of the ordinary but I thought it fit the halloween theme perfectly. Winning was incredible, of course I liked my mix quite a bit but I sure wasn't expecting a victory, especially in a competition with more professional DJs than I!

r/trance October 2017 Spooky Mix Competition WINNING MIX

Another Dreamstate come and gone, and so begins another year of waiting for the next one, though hopefully I'll be able to make it out to Lumi this year so the wait won't be quite so long. While the end is tough, I heard some outstanding sets and left with great memories! 

This mix is split into two parts. The first half is entirely tracks taken from the sets that impressed me the most, and is more tech and uplifting. The second half is strictly psy, since some of my favorite sets were Outsiders, Alpha Portal, Sonic Species, and Astrix, but I have no idea what some of the stuff they played was. Some of the tunes in there were tunes that were played, but some are just tunes I'm digging at the moment.

Whipped together a DJ, tech trance friendly edit of the classic hardcore track The Horrorist - One Night In NYC. Loosely based off of the edit Bryan Kearney played in his Kearnage NY set back in 2016. Obviously I condemn the actions of the young man in the story. 

"One Night in NYC" describes the experiences of a young innocent suburban girl during a night in New York City. It's a scary downbeat track, and what is described in the lyrics, could happen each and every night year round, a notion that makes the track even eerier. The single hit No.1 on the Deutsche Dance Charts the first week of January 2001. In May 2001 for UK magazine MixMag, Pete Tong reviewed "One Night in NYC" and said, "Big records demand your attention, and this is bound to get yours... Love it hate it, you will certainly know when you've heard it."

The Horrorist - One Night In NYC (Pascal FEOS Remix) [Sammy K Edit]

The theme of this mix competition was to make an hour long mix where the titles of the tracks create a coherent poem or story. This took a whiiiiiile to put together, but I found the challenge of both trying to create a poem and a coherent mix that matches it extremely enjoyable. I won! 

I knew almost immediately that I'd be using some Eco and Breakfast tunes, as those generally have colorful, original titles. I got the first few tracks together pretty quickly but I struggled to both make sure the mix progressed somewhere, close out the poem satisfyingly, and get the transitions tight enough.

My 6th chair mix is probably my favorite to date, but I felt like there were a few spots that could have been ironed out a bit, as at the time it was on the fly, and that overall it was a bit too long for the impact I was trying to leave. When the r/trance "april" mixcomp theme of "anything goes" was announced, I figured this would be a good opportunity to make a cleaner, condensed version of it. However, there were some new twists I wanted to add as well...

It won, to my surprise. Who would have thought a mostly ambient mix would win a trance mix competition?

Dreamstate was cancelled but that doesn't mean Trancegiving was! My first (real) live set of 2020, closing out a tiny, private, socially distanced, masked up gathering.
