September's Dance Music features a mix recorded live on two turntables by native Chicagoan Samone Roberts, our favorite resident disco diva extraordinaire. Here are Samone's comments:

"I've always had a lot of respect for fellow Chicagoans Mazi and Nathan Drew Larsen. Naturally, I was both flattered and excited when I was asked to record a DJ mix for the Fresh Meat Podcast, especially one centered around my favorite musical time period. The dance music of the late 70's and early 80's is not just nostalgic but also inspired me to DJ and eventually create musical works of my own. The songs that comprise this mix are personal. Some have been part of my soul for years, while others have been recently discovered by way of vinyl digging, internet searching, and kind recommendations by friends and colleagues. All of the songs vary greatly in sound and style, but all have moved me to dance. This music is fun. Isn't that how it should be?"

I’ve been sitting on this edit for quite a while. Occasionally I made adjustments in the arrangement, but never felt like it was finished until recently. This was a challenging one to say the least, and I finally wrapped it up a couple of weeks ago. This was possibly serendipitous, but the intention was to be a tribute to Herb Kent, a living legend, who gave us so many great Sunday mornings in Chicago. This edit is of "The Kool Gent" by The Olympic Runners, which was inspired by Herb’s famous moniker. My goal was to keep the groove and emotion, while making the arrangement a bit more DJ and dance floor friendly. I hope you enjoy playing and listening. Respectfully, Samone. 320 mp3 download.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Don't forget that you are your most valuable asset. Your sound, your aesthetic, your likes and dislikes are unique to you as an artist and a human. Stay true to your values and express your personal narrative. Don't be afraid to walk away from what is no longer serving you, and from those whose values do not align with your own. There's a lot of people in the scene who seem important right now, but in ten years no one will remember them.

Samone's style is deeply rooted in the sound and space of Chicago. As a child raised on the southwest side she spent countless weekends skating at the Roller Rink, dancing to her Mother's disco collection, and listening to WBMX on the radio. Disco, house and the city itself have been strong and constant influences throughout her life. Samone’s DJing encompasses a variety of selections from four on the floor percussive house, classics, and grooving edits to obscure yet approachable disco. Outside the booth Samone has produced some of Chicago's most revered parties including Hugo Ball (former founding member), Changes, position, and the 100 person hotbox. Currently she remains a staple DJ at Chicago's Smart Bar whose excellent programming abilities, knowledge, and experience bring inspiration and fun to the dance floor.
