A Night in Berlin

During American space missions of the early 1960s, both astronauts John Glenn and Scott Carpenter witnessed what they called "fireflies", which turned out to be ice crystals jarred loose from the exterior of the spacecraft when the wall was struck from the inside. This is Carpenter’s voice, in 1962. The "fireflies" distracted him so much that his mission almost ended in disaster.

This piece tries to give a sonic impression of the fireflies, and also the possible disorientations and hallucinations that could occur in the solitude of deep space.

I used two sounds of planetary radio emissions recorded and distributed by NASA, among other material, and various sound-mangling software.

“Fireflies” was created as part of the upcoming “Space Is the Place” collection organized by Cities and Memory Global Sound Project.
