"The Pillars of Creation", a tone poem for orchestra, is inspired by the three gigantic plumes of gas in the Eagle Nebula. The plumes became the subject of a famous composite photo taken by the Hubble telescope, from which this piece receives its title. The Pillars have likely already been destroyed by a supernova, but these images will not reach us for another thousand years due to the limitation of the speed of light.

The piece is delivered in three main sections, with a brief introduction and coda. The first section represents the creation of the pillars, the quiet middle section represents their existence, and the final section represents their destruction. The coda returns to the stark, amorphous materials from the introduction.
