The Anorak Band are super stoked to announce their debut double A-side single, with all proceeds going towards Trussell Trust food banks. Recorded prior to the lockdown, the single pulls in influences from the sounds of the 60s, particularly the works of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, alongside the jazz flavours of Hailu Mergia and Max Roach.

The Stingray is a quintessential surf song; rambunctious and colourful from the get-go, it sharply turns into a sultry jazz break at the midway point, reminiscent of the aforementioned Mergia alongside Drums Unlimited-era Max Roach. The Tortoise is a beautiful contrast, beginning in earnest and building into lilting guitar harmonies reminiscent of the instrumental work behind Pet Sounds, with be-bop interludes and brooding Rhodes interjections.

“We tried to capture the essence of that golden era as closely as possible,” Sam reveals. “All guitars are recorded using my undeniably cool ‘68 Selmer Treble & Bass and Fender FR-1000 reverb tank, which perfectly captures that springy, surfy sound. 

“We also had the nifty idea of using the Glyn Johns mic technique, which suited the drum parts down to the ground. We even messed around with running the Rhodes through an old Vox!”

With the coronavirus crisis having a devastating impact on communities and income, the band chose to release these songs with the sole aim of raising money for the Trussell Trust, a charity that works to end the need of food banks in the UK. “I believe these are feel-good songs, so it made sense to use them to do good too,” comments Sam.

Gyda'r argyfwng coronafirws yn cael effaith ddinistriol ar gymunedau a chyllid, dewisodd y band ryddhau'r caneuon hyn gyda'r unig nôd o godi arian ar gyfer y Trussell Trust, elusen sy'n gweithio i ddod ag angen banciau bwyd yn y DU i ben. “Rwy’n credu bod y caneuon yma'n gwneud i chi deimlo'n dda ac yn llawen, felly roedd yn amlwg i'w ddefnyddio ar gyfer rhywbeth positif hefyd,” meddai Sam.

I used to date a man who I was clearly not compatible with. It got a bit hairy towards the end. He stole some of my stuff, destroyed some of my other stuff, and was altogether a right handful. Having said that, I'm no picnic to be with either so I understand how this mess became mine to clean. Still, it wasn't ideal and this song is about figuring out that at the end of the day both of us could and should do better finding a partner.
