Snake is made of ribs. Frog has none at all.
so while Frog sat on a Lilly Pad Of Staying Pure And Small,
Snake, because it could, climbed the applewood 
of the Tree Of The Knowledge Of Evil And Good.
Most of the animals had heads bowed toward the ground,
so the humble Frog was the animal they found.
But Human, who, it should be said, was made of ribs as well,
found the Snake, and ate its fruit, and soon began to swell.
The human grew a belly as round and wide as Earth,
and waddled 'round the garden, showing off its girth.
The animals all stared in fear: They knew what laid within,
for Frog's humble Lilly had taught them of growth's sin.
One day, the Human squatted down, and from its busom sprang
ten thousand million humans, and this is what they sang:
"Grow big, my dears, grow wide, my dears, live long, my dears, move fast!
The snake has shown what's Good to us: to know, to grow, to last!"
The animals all ran and hid, but all to no avail;
the humans found their every print and grabbed their every tail.
They lashed the Evil animals onto a massive pyre,
and soaked their furs in butane, then lit them all on fire.
The fire ate them, tooth and claw, feather, fin, and fang;
The animals screamed a mighty cry; but the humans simply sang:
"Grow big, my fire, grow wide, my fire, live long, my fire, move fast!
The snake has shown what's Good to us: to know, to grow, to last!"
Just as the humans wished it, the mighty fire grew.
It ate the holy garden up; it ate the oceans, too. 
Soon the humans saw they had nowhere left to run.
And to the fire the humans fell, one million to one hundred to one.
The final human climbed a tree; the final applewood.
It was the Tree of the Knowledge of Evil and Good.
Peering from its branches, the human saw the Frog
on the Lilly Pad Of Staying Pure and Small, and this was its song:
"It's Good to know, it's Good to grow, it's Good to move so fast,
but hear my message and know its truth: Nothing Good Can Last!"
The human grabbed the frog, and shouted to the sky:
"Why did I not listen, God? Why, oh why, oh why?"
And Elohim replied, bright and heaven-blessed:
"You had too many ribs, my son,
too big a heart to hold inside your chest."

The Length of the Fuse of Forgiveness

Some nights I can feel time in months, the way the Greeks did, as their
storm boats sailed into clouds, tucked away in the hold, fiddling with an abacus for
months. Usually, I am thoroughly trapped in seconds: I refresh the page when the ad doesn't have the option
to skip. But the Greeks, in ships, would sail past the sirens for months. Imagine knowing that an action 
leads to death, and
being able to take that action,
constantly, constantly, for
months? Perhaps that is the detritus of power: 
Great Men must always think in months, 
in full armies slaughtered, in hundreds of babies killed --
never in ones. Never in ones.
If they grasped each heart in that way, every pound of flesh beneath their feet,
they would have no choice:
they would steer their ships into the rocks. 
And yet: Look again, 
all humans are Great Men.
Each of us presses our weight to the grindstone of destruction.
Each of us cuts down our tree.
For months, fiddling with an abacus, we
weigh our tiny sums, tucked beneath
our sheets, ignoring the time, in months,
stacked on our chests.
