"Rivermix" is a series dedicated to binaurally chronicling textures, gestures, tempi, intensities, tones, acoustic depths, and space colouration of the Ilm river at selected listening points within a length of approximately 400 Meters in Bad Berka town, Thuringia, Germany.                                                                                                                               The recordings are done at randomly selected periods and temperatures through various seasons in the year and mixed according to the recording sequence. The result is an immersive Sound Collage of the entire space which reveals the diverse characters of the river. 
Each series of the project is named according to the abbreviation of the town,  country, date and period of the recording.

This project chronicles diverse spaces of human, mechanical and nature activities during spring of 2021 in Bad Berka town, Germany in an immersive listening experience. It starts with acoustic events at a traffic stop, continues through a river path, a wellness park and ends up at a Klinikum where a black bird was taped in its full acoustic element. One major feature of this recording is the Ilm river sounding through Bad Berka town. 

Bad Berka is a German spa town, situated in the south of Weimar region in the state of Thuringia with an iron-rich spring and Kneipp facilities. In 2002 the award of "State Recognised Spa with Mineral Spring Health Facility" was given to the city.
The river flowing through the town, which is embedded in new red sandstone, is called Ilm.

An Agbadza Ensemble Music performance recorded at the Department of Ethnomusicology, University of Ghana, Legon. 06.2016.

The Agbadza Ensemble is from the Southern Community in the Volta Region of Ghana.

It was derived from an old war dance called Atrikpui. It started as a predominantly male dance, but now it is performed by both sexes.

Instrumental set up: Gakogui (double bell) Axatse (rattles) Kagan, Kidi, Sogo (the master drum)

Performance practice: Agbadza performance practice is similar to that of Atsiagbeko in which the singers stand behind the drummers in horseshoe formation. There is an element of free style singing by way of introduction, as the other players are cued in by the master drummer. Dancing is done in pairs normally man pairs with a woman.

Occasion for Performance: Agbadza dance is basically performed during funerals, durbar of chiefs, festivals and installation of chiefs.

Costume: Dancers of Agbadza do not have any limitations in their dressing. Men mostly wear shorts (i.e togas with cap on) with a cloth or several cloths tied around the waist with a cow-tail whisk in their hand.

A solo  Atɛntɛbɛn music performance recorded at the Department of Ethnomusicology, University of Ghana, Legon. 06.2016.
The music being listened to is a dirge to mourn Kings, Chiefs and other very prominent royals.

Atɛntɛbɛn is an aerophone and originated from Twenedurase in Kwahu traditional area in the Eastern region of Ghana. 
It is made from the Bamboo plant. Originally, the instrument had four holes and was played horizontally. It is played as an ensemble of several Atɛntɛbɛn instruments that formed the Atɛntɛ Ochestra.

Dr. Ephraim Amu, a famous music composer in Ghana expanded the range of the instrument by adding more holes. The compass of the instrument is now two octaves. It is now played as a solo instrument and also in ensembles. It is used in traditional ensembles and also in popular music. Art music compositions involving the Atɛntɛbɛn and the piano have been composed by some Ghanaian composers, notably Dr. Ephraim Amu and Professor Nketia.

An Adowa Ensemble Music performance recorded at the Department of Ethnomusicology, University of Ghana, Legon. 06.2016.

This is a music and dance type found among the Twi-speaking people of Ghana. The Ensemble is made up of drum orchestra and chorus predominated by female singers. The dance, according to legend was seen by a hunter on one of his usual expeditions in the night. It is said that the hunter saw a chimpanzee beating the chest and it sounded like the graceful movement of the deer (i.e Adowa in the Akan language)
The hunter spent long hours in the forest observing the graceful movement made by the deer and from this original beginnings, the Asante Adowa has evolved in a suite of seven, some of which are:
1. Adowa pa   2. Dampon  3. Asokore Mampong  4. Adefe  5. Techiman.

Each item in the suite is actually a playing style characterized by emphasis on either the tempo or the type of set rhythms played on the Atumpan drums.

Instrument set up: Atumpan, Petia, Apentema, 2 donno (the hourglass drum), 2 Adawura (Slit bells.

Performance practice: In the performance setting, the instrumentalists sit in a horseshoe formation with singers standing behind them. The lead singer begins the performance by singing an introductory piece in free style, referred to as "aho". The bell player is invited by the  master drummer immediately by setting the pace of the performance and delivering the time-line for the bell to imitate.
The other instrumentalists are invited to join the performance in turns. Finally, the lead singer and the chorus enter with a medley of songs.
Members of the band or the general public take turns in the open dancing arena. Usually, dancers dance in pairs, male and female, though solo dancing is permitted.

Occasions for performance: Festivals, funerals, state functions.

Costume: The women wear one piece of cloth around their bodies leaving the shoulder bare to the knee level with another cloth from waist to the calf while the men wear a piece of cloth folded into a lump at the waist leaving the upper torso bare.

*The Ilm is a 128.7 kilometers (80.0 mi) long river in Thuringia, Germany. It is a left tributary of the Saale, into which it flows in Großheringen near Bad Kösen.
